Sensr - Rugged Motion-Sensing Device

Challenge

Sensr, supplier of motion monitoring and recording instruments, was looking for advanced sensor technology for an innovative line of motion-recording instruments designed for industrial research, product testing and the shipping industry.

Solution

Sensr chose NXP's three-axis accelerometer to handle the critical task of motion detection in its GP series instruments. The GP instruments have been used to track a shipment of aircraft models for NASA and are being used by BNSF Railway to monitor bridge pier motions.

Case Study

The Challenge

Sophisticated "environmental recorders" have been on the market for a number of years. These are essentially self-contained field computers which are used to measure acceleration and other parameters during transportation, distribution and related activities. They are fastened to vehicles or structures such as bridges, hidden in packages and subjected to the actual dynamic environment. Later, when connected to a host computer, the data is uploaded and analyzed. The goal is to reproduce the damaging elements of the rugged environment in a laboratory in order to improve the design of products, packages and systems.  The challenge has been that these “environmental recorders” can be hard to use, deploy and understand. 

The Application

To overcome these obstacles, Sensr designed the GP series that are rugged, compact instruments for recording motion, shock, impact, orientation and temperature. The instruments have been specifically designed to be user-friendly.

The Sensr instruments provide real-time data streaming, a USB interface, easy-to-use software, LED alert indicators, event flagging and XYZ-axis from NXP Semiconductors to handle the critical task of motion detection. The resulting output provides developers with easy-to-understand data records that include graphs and tables.

Sensr‘s cost-effective, compact instruments – the GP1 programmable accelerometer and the GP2 USB accelerometer – enable users to monitor, record and analyze even the slightest of motions, impacts, shocks, and drops, as well as temperature changes. This sophisticated motion monitoring capability enables developers to test the impact of sudden jolts on new products in the lab. The instruments are designed to record typical and abusive handling consequences, identify uncontrolled handling events, and document when tips, falls, drops and improper orientation occur, and quantify a shipper’s performance. For example, the instruments have been used to track a shipment of aircraft models for NASA. They are also being used by BNSF Railway to monitor bridge pier motions

Housed in a sleek, rugged billet-aluminum case about the size of an auto ignition key, Sensr’s GP instruments are among the smallest, most sensitive sensing devices available for commercial use. The instruments can capture subtle movements that other recorders miss, and they can integrate static, dynamic and environmental data into a comprehensive data record that clearly shows what has occurred and when.

The GP1 and GP2 instruments can continuously record motion data for up to 35 days and have a memory capacity of more than 570,000 data points. Both instruments feature a standard USB connection to stream real-time data directly to a PC for real-time analysis.

Technology Behind the Scenes

NXP’s MMA7261Q MEMS-based accelerometer is designed to allow the instruments to deliver high sensitivity performance with triple-axis sensing for full-range directional motion. The MMA7261Q accelerometer enables the GP series to offer a variety of g-ranges (2.5g, 3.3g, 6.7g and 10g). Additional sensor features include fast response time, low current consumption, low-voltage operation and a standby mode - all in a small-profile package.
