Body control modules control the various electrical components responsible for a car’s comfort and convenience functions. They manage loads such as wipers, lights and motors, monitor the operating status of switches and control signal transmission. Our ever-expanding portfolio for vehicle body electronics is ideal for both centralized and decentralized systems. The products offer low power consumption and power dissipation, and include a complete range of solutions for all automotive networking standards.

The rise of partial networking

Modern cars can have some 70 control units, each consuming up to 2 W while awaiting activation. Partial networking places any that are not needed into sleep or standby mode, saving significant energy. Messages are still transferred across the network, ensuring fast re-activation with no decrease in performance. Our products are perfect for this innovative network solution. We support the evaluation of its capability in actual networks using our CAN/LIN/SBC portfolio, together with specially built prototypes based on mass produced devices.

Driving a range of loads

The load current in the body segment goes from several mA for driving LEDs up to more than 20 A for controlling motors. NXP offers small-signal MOSFETs or low VCEsat (BISS) transistors for small loads, and Power MOSFET devices in advanced TrenchMOS technology for high current requirements. TrenchPLUS, for example, is a range of standard MOSFETs with added protection features, including current and temperature sensing components, overvoltage clamps and gate protection (ESD) diodes. All of these products share similar characteristics, with low conduction losses and innovative packages to save board space and provide cost-effective solutions.

The TDA3629 is a light position controller with a monolithic IC that adapts to the elevation of the light beam in the car’s headlight. PCA96xx products allow up to 16 independent PWM channels for individual brightness control, global dimming and color mixing for any type of status and indicator LED. For the center stack module, our PCA851xx LCD driver series is ideal for driving segmented displays at high optical performance. The family comprises cased products driving up to 480 segments for Chip-On-Board, and uncased products driving up to 640 segments for direct Chip-On-Glass.

In-vehicle communication

Besides offering all the major networking protocols including CAN, LIN and FlexRay, NXP offers highly integrated IVN products such as our system basis chip (SBC) families. SBCs combine one or more bus transceivers, voltage regulators, I/O pins and optional watchdog in a single IC. They offer advanced low-power mode control and smart fail-safe behavior. Pin compatible family devices with different transceiver options support scalable platforms by simply changing the population of the PCB.

Magnetoresistive and temperature sensors

KMA magneto-resistive (MR) angular sensor systems are ideal for a variety of body applications. With an output signal virtually independent of magnet tolerances, magnet temperature coefficients, magnet-sensor distance and positioning tolerances, they guarantee reliability and simplify your manufacturing process.

Our silicon-based temperature sensors offer a virtually linear characteristic over their entire operating range, ensuring highly accurate measurement with a long operating life. The KTY series are ideal in systems for overheat protection and heating control. Used throughout the car, they contribute considerably to a safer, more efficient and more comfortable ride.

I/O protection

NXP offers a series of ESD protection devices out of the PESD family, specifically designed to protect automotive networks. The MMBZ series offers single line bidirectional or dual-line unidirectional transient overvoltage protection in a small SOT23 package. Surge protection up to 600 W is assured by the transient voltage suppressor (TVS) product family.

Low ohmic Power MOSFET devices in advanced TrenchMOS technology allow robust reverse polarity protection.

Glue logic

Beside standard logic functionality with different supply voltage range and speed in innovative packages, NXP offers dedicated devices as low Ohmic analog switches (NX3L series), analog and digital multiplexers and I/O expansion devices to strive for cost optimized body solutions.
