Battery charger
Today's portable, Li-Ion battery powered devices use fast internal chargers that require a high level of voltage / current control and temperature monitoring. Operating at low voltage (< 3 V), high energy efficiency is a major concern in this application. Most battery technologies in the market use a solution with external pass elements, and differ between two main paths: Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) or a MOSFET as pass element. NXP offers a wide range of BJT with ultra low saturation voltage (VCEsat) and high current gain (hFE) capability. A low VCEsat (BISS) transistor can easily replace a MOSFET in this application if the PMU is capable of direct biasing the BISS transistor. If not, an additional small-signal MOSFET control transistor is required. Both solutions deliver the same performance as a MOSFET, together with significant advantages such as cost reduction and extremely low leakage current.
