For ePassports, controlling access to sensitive personal information is a fundamental requirement. Our secure smart card IC product families feature highly advanced counter-measures against attacks as well as hardware firewalls, ensuring personal data stays safe and secure on the chip.
The adoption of RFID based biometric passports has created a more convenient travel experience through less time waiting in line and more efficient identity proofing via automated border control gates. More than 120 countries issue electronic passports, and almost 80 percent of them trust NXP’s SmartMX® microctonroller to authenticate the identities of travelers and reduce document fraud.
Every ICAO-compliant ePassport is performing the same basic operation of authenticating the chip and accessing its data but there are different protocols with different security levels. There are currently three generations of protocols known as basic access control (BAC), extended access control (EAC) and supplemental access control (SAC) each with its own security mechanisms. New formats are already on the horizon like the LDS2 for worldwide interoperability of ePassport technology. LDS2 represents the next step for electronic passports and will turn passport data fully digital by adding a read-write function.
