September 2006: Asia is home to around 60% of the world's population. It's also the home of some of the world's largest and fastest growing economies. So it's no surprise that there is a great deal of activity in the Asian RFID market.
In fact, Asia has always been at the forefront of RFID - many of the first contactless ticketing transport schemes were in Asia. And the continent continues to lead the way with mobile payment, multi-application card, ePassport and NFC rollouts taking place in many countries.
Of course, the sheer volumes involved are enough to make any manufacturer sit up and take notice. On its own, China will require 800 million eID cards and a staggering 3 billion smart labels for its libraries alone. And that's just one country.
However, RFID also has the potential to help some of Asia's poorest people. For example, an RFID-based “milk collection scheme” has helped reduce fraud by middlemen. The local people now feel they have greater ownership, leading to a 30% increase in milk collection - a huge boost to the rural economy.
As a market and technology leader in RFID, NXP Semiconductors is involved in numerous projects and trials across Asia - you can discover a few of them in the next few pages. Whether it's in transport ticketing, eGovernment or payment applications, we're working with other industry leaders and government bodies to deliver solutions that make people's lives easier while safeguarding personal privacy.
