Gemalto and NXP Semiconductors have announced an agreement that will help the industry address the growing demand for NFC-based mobile payment and ticketing applications from telecom operators, service providers and consumers.
The initiative aims to facilitate the definition of standardized SIM-based NFC products, speeding up the availability of SIM-based NFC phones that meet telecom operators' requirements. Working together, the two firms will define and develop SIM-enabled Near Field Communication (NFC) solutions based on the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) to guarantee interoperability with MIFARE technology and other widely deployed contactless protocols.
The two companies will jointly evaluate and specify the compatibility between MIFARE and the SWP. NXP, the co-inventor of NFC and inventor of MIFARE, is designing new MIFARE-compatible SIM and SIM-enabled NFC chips that support the SWP protocol. Meanwhile Gemalto, a leader in digital security, is developing a SIM card and trusted service management offering for banks, transport companies and telecom operators.
Single Wire Protocol
The Single Wire Protocol is a specification for a single-wire connection between the SIM card and an NFC chip in a cell phone. It is currently under final review by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
