The NXP Nexperia UMA-enabled GSM/GPRS/EDGE VAS system solution 6100 has received PC Magazine’s top award for cellular in their 23rd annual Awards for Technology Excellence.
The award, which recognizes the best technology achievements of the year, applies to a range of applications, from operating systems and processors to robotics, gaming, and automotive.
In the cellular category, PC Magazine selected NXP’s solution for Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology, which lets consumers move between cellular and Wi-Fi networks without dropping their calls.
By giving callers seamless access to EDGE and GPRS cellular networks as well as WLAN networks via the 2.4-GHz unlicensed wireless spectrum, the 6100 does what PC magazine calls the “previously unthinkable.”
When a subscriber moves outside the range of a cellular network, UMA technology automatically accesses the nearest unlicensed WLAN network to enable seamless roaming. UMA technology also manages the hand-off between networks while the handset is in use, so traveling subscribers can conduct voice calls and data sessions without interruption. Service providers and network operators that support UMA technology can make use of the existing WLAN infrastructure to offer their subscribers greater coverage and an improved user experience.
Built around a state-of-the-art GSM/GPRS/EDGE platform, the 6100 is a market-proven, fully validated, and completely IOT-tested design that supports seamless roaming and delivers an improved user experience. It includes high-performance multimedia features, including video recording, A/V streaming, software polyphony, and DRM 1.0, as well as advanced connectivity features, such as Bluetooth 1.2, Near Field Communication (NFC), and USB 2.0.
