Accelerating the transition to 4G, NXP has introduced the
Nexperia cellular baseband PNX6910, the world's fastest
high-bandwidth cellular software modem with support for LTE.
Powered by NXP's Embedded Vector Processor (EVP), a powerful new Digital Signal Processing (DSP) core, the PNX6910 is capable of achieving data transfer rates of 150 Mbits downlink and 50 Mbits uplink. The EVP enables multimode capability and supports the entire GSM family of standards, including Long Term Evolution (LTE) and its Chinese version, LTE TDD, so it paves the way for truly global roaming.
3GPP LTE represents the exciting future of next-generation broadband mobility for consumers. Customers will benefit from an enhanced user experience as next-generation mobile devices deliver ultra-fast Internet browsing, streaming video services, multi-player gaming, and even full-length HD films. In fact, the PNX6910 can download an entire HD movie in less than seven minutes - more than twenty times faster than an HSPA Cat 8 device at 7.2 Mbps.
Using a software modem also helps reduce time-to-market, since it simplifies chip design. On average, since the software approach supports parallel design phases, it can reduce the chip-design effort by as much as 1.5 to 2 years.
The PNX6910 is optimized for a wide range of consumer electronics beyond mobile phones, bringing broadband connectivity to digital still and video cameras, next-generation laptops, Internet tablets, and ultra-mobile PCs (UMPC).
The PNX6910 will allow OEMS and CE manufacturers to participate in the early LTE market, with a reference design that can connect a wide variety of consumer products via cellular services to the internet. The software modem concept incorporates a single RF chip and a single baseband chip, which will help device manufacturers deliver ultra-small form-factors capable of very high speeds. Meanwhile, power efficiency is assured through the use of adaptive frequency and voltage scaling, beating the historical power curve prediction.
