Freescale Technology Forum Best of Show winner exemplifies cool, innovative technology

Genesi honored for home media center technology demonstration based on open-source software and a high-performance Freescale processor based on a PowerPC® core

ORLANDO, Fla. (Freescale Technology Forum) – June 21, 2005 – Innovation took center stage in the Technology Lab when Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL, FSL.B) awarded Best of Show to Genesi, a leading provider of computing products based on PowerPC® processors.

The centerpiece of Genesi’s winning Technology Lab demonstration is a home media center using Freescale’s high-performance MPC7447 processor based on a PowerPC core. Future system versions can easily be upgraded to run on the newly announced MPC7448 processor, scaling to 1.7GHz. Because the MPC7447 device is designed to dissipate less than 10 watts at 1GHz, the quiet-running media center operates with fanless passive cooling. The processor’s AltiVec technology helps enable the system to deliver exceptionally fast graphical and multimedia performance. Based on open-source software, the Genesi system also allows software developers to tap into the huge reservoir of application design talent that exists in the open-source community.

Best of Show judges included media guests from CMP United Business Media’s CommsDesign, an online EE Times community; Penton Media’s industry-respected Electronic Design magazine; and analogZONE, an online publication read by more than 125,000 electrical engineers worldwide. The independent team of media judges ultimately selected Genesi from a diverse field of hardware and software product demonstrations based technical merit, market impact, practical application and “cool factor.”

“With so many high-quality entries and outstanding product innovations on display, it was really tough to choose a clear-cut winner,” said guest judge Lee Goldberg, senior editor of analogZONE. “We chose Genesi’s open-source home media server because it represents a novel open-system platform approach for the home entertainment market. It leverages Freescale’s power-efficient, high-performance PowerPC processor and unleashes the potential for innovation offered by its open architecture.”

Honorable mentions in Freescale’s Best of Show competition included:

Freescale Technology Forum platinum sponsors demonstrating their innovations in the Technology Lab included Future Electronics, Green Hills Software, MontaVista Software, QNX Software Systems and Wind River.

“We applaud not only Genesi and the honorable mentions, but also each of our partners exhibiting this week in Freescale’s Technology Lab,” said David Perkins, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Networking and Computing Systems Group. “From our perspective, all of our partners are winners because they have a deep passion for design excellence based on Freescale semiconductors and innovation that ultimately will benefit the entire industry.”

The Technology Lab and Best of Show award are integral parts of Freescale’s initiatives to highlight innovations in the developer community that leverage open architectures, streamline development processes and speed time to market in the embedded intelligence and connectivity market. The Technology Lab provides Freescale Technology Forum attendees with interactive, hands-on opportunities to experience hardware and software products in an exhibition environment created especially for design engineers.
