Philips enables digital TV viewing through all home entertainment devices

Introduces highly compact, low power COFDM demodulator for terrestrial digital TV reception

Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) today introduced a very small, low power DVB-T / H channel decoder, the TDA10048HN. Combined with the latest generation of silicon tuners TDA18211/18271HD, the TDA10048HN offers a very small compact digital TV front-end. For manufacturers, this will allow production of a cost effective, rapidly integrated product, which can be used in any home entertainment device be it STBs, DVD Recorders, iDTV, Portable Media Players (PMPs), or multi-tuner products such as Personal Video Recorders (PVRs).

The DVB-T / H channel decoder is also a Coded Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (COFDM) demodulator able to operate with power consumption as low as 160mW, reducing power bills from set-top-boxes and providing outstanding use time on battery powered applications. The DVB-T / H channel decoder is fully compliant with European demodulation standards, including the latest Nordig unified and D-Book specifications.

"Devices offering low power consumption and easy integration will drive adoption of the future digital home products,” said Menno Kleingeld, senior marketing director, Philips Semiconductors. "The DVB-T / H channel decoder not only delivers the most effective power efficiency in its class, it enhances user experience by ensuring reliable TV reception, speedy channel surfing and longer playback on portable digital TV devices. Production-ready reference designs from Philips ensure a quick time-to-market and built-in functionality reduces bill-of-material for manufacturers.”

The TDA10048HN supports DVB-T 2K, 4K and 8K FFT length, it is also capable of demodulating any DVB-H transmissions for portable applications. The IC includes adjacent and co-channel rejection capability with on-chip digital filters, adaptive echo cancellation with Doppler compensation, ultra fast channel scanning and an enhanced ‘Pulse Killer’ algorithm that reduces the disturbing effects caused by impulsive noise interference from vehicle, personal computers, phones and other domestic electrical appliances.

Packaged in a 7 x 7 mm 48-pin HVQFN casing, the TDA10048HN has a pad pitch of 0.5mm, which enables the use of ultra-compact, low cost PCBs meeting the growing demand for smaller, sleeker product families.

Availability

The TDA10048HN is available on evaluation boards with drivers as well as production-ready reference designs of STBs, multi-tuner products and portable TV applications to enable Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) achieve a rapid time-to-market, at low costs.

Samples of the TDA10048HN are available now. Volume production will begin in Q3 2006.
