Philips Semiconductors and Streaming Networks introduce real-time consumer MPEG-4 video encoder

Sunnyvale, Calif., August 27, 2001- Philips Semiconductors, a division of Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI), today announced that Streaming Networks will provide a real-time consumer MPEG-4 video-encoder targeted for its Trimedia™ very long instruction word (VLIW) media processor. This partnership provides a one-chip solution ideally suited for embedded applications such as security systems, surveillance systems, video streaming and video on demand.

The MPEG 4 encoder is capable of producing bit streams that are fully compliant with MPEG-4 ISO/IEC 14496-2 Simple Visual Profile and Main Visual Profile. The rate controller is tuned for optimum performance for bit rates ranging from 384 Kbits per second up to 4 Mbits per second. Among other features, the encoder is able to generate error resilient video streams, and supports concurrent encoding of multiple rectangular video objects in real time. Additionally, the encoder supports both progressive and interlaced videos and compression tools.

"The combination of Streaming Networks expertise in MPEG 4 and Philips Semiconductors TriMedia VLIW media processor technology will enable our customers to bring a new generation of products to market quickly," said Ayub Khan, president, Streaming Networks. "This combination of the TriMedia VLIW media processor and MPEG 4 video encoder is a key element for any internet appliance or streaming video solution."

"Together, Philips Semiconductors and Streaming Networks, are delivering a one-chip solution capable of MPEG-4 video encoding and decoding," said Eric Freid, business development manager, business line media processing, Philips Semiconductors. "Our continuing relationship with Streaming Networks and other partners will provide our customers with a complete one-chip solution, giving them a market advantage by streamlining their development process."

Philips Semiconductors will be demonstrating its leadership in TriMedia VLIW and MPEG 4 at IFA 2001 from August 27th through August 31st.
