Philips unveils industry's lowest-power USB interface devices
Philips offers family of full-speed and high-speed USB interfaces for portable products
Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) today announced the industry's lowest-power Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface devices. Philips' ISP1582/83 and ISP1183 offer low power, high speed and low-pin count for portable device manufacturers. Philips' new USB interface devices are ideally suited to offer seamless connectivity among mobile phones, digital still cameras, digital video cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs), MP3 players and other fast-growing portable consumer products.
Consumers are demanding small, mobile products that will easily connect with one another to transfer content such as digital photographs, music and calendar information. Consumers are also demanding portable products with a long battery life. By applying its proven expertise in USB technology, Philips' ISP1582/83 and ISP1183 interfaces are effectively addressing the growing connectivity and power requirements of the portable device market.
"Philips continues its commitment to provide manufacturers with industry-leading USB solutions," said Rajeev Mehtani, Wired Connectivity product line manager, Philips Semiconductors. "With its new low-power and high-speed USB interface devices, Philips is enabling easy standards-based connectivity for mobile devices and peripherals popular with consumers on the go."
The Philips ISP1582/83 interface devices have a unique and patented power supply circuit, which allows customers to add Hi-speed USB peripheral capability without placing heavy power requirements on the end product. The ISP1582 draws power from both the USB cable and the product's power supply. Therefore, while competitive low-power USB peripheral solutions draw approximately 85 milliamps (mA) from a system's power supply, Philips ISP1582/83 currently consumes 45mA with less than 4mA required from the power supply of the end product.
The Philips ISP1183 USB interface device offers a low-power, low-pin-count solution while maintaining full-speed data transfer of up to 12 Mbps. The device power supply and corresponding input / output logic thresholds have been designed for 1.8 volts. The package pinout features 32 pins in a 5 mm x 5 mm package, with an 8-bit, general-purpose parallel interface. All of these features result in a low-power USB device that can be easily interfaced to numerous microcontrollers found in portable devices.
Availability
Philips' ISP1582/83 and ISP1183 are sampling now and will be in volume production in Q1 2004. Corresponding firmware is available at no additional cost.
