The Thunderbolt™ Technology introduced by Intel Corporation is a high–speed I/O technology that consists of an interface with two 10.3 Gbps full–duplex data paths. This interface uses existing PCI–Express and DisplayPort and joins them together into a single data signal through the Intel developed controller. In the host PC, the controller takes in the PCI–Express from the I/O controller hub and the DisplayPort from either the native signal in the I/O controller or from a discrete graphics controller. This combined signal is sent via a full-duplex pair of differential signals. Each controller has two ports available to enable daisy chaining.

  • CBTL04DP211, CBTL06DP211, CBTL05023, and CBTL05024: Four High Performance Mux/Switches for Thunderbolt Applications

NXP has released three high-speed multiplexer (mux) switches supporting Thunderbolt I/O technology. Thunderbolt technology enables fast data transfers between PCs and peripheral devices by supporting data and display connections over a single Thunderbolt connector. Two high-performance mux switches from NXP – the CBTL05023, and CBTL06DP211 – are presently used in Thunderbolt host and peripheral designs and are recommended for use in Intel reference designs. CBTL05023 is optimized to interface with the Thunderbolt connector, providing excellent signal integrity, a very small package and low BOM cost. CBTL06DP211 is used to interface with the DP-to-HDMI converter.

For legacy reference designs, the CBTL04DP211 is used in peripheral designs with better signal integrity performance, eliminating any voltage clipping.

Additionally, a next generation high performance mux switch for Thunderbolt applications, the CBTL05024, is now sampling to selected customers and will support Thunderbolt in 2013 and beyond. The CBTL05024 is optimized for Thunderbolt Mux applications with improved signal integrity characteristics, lowest power, small package, and lowest BOM cost. The CBTL05024 integrates the 10.3 Gbps Thunderbolt signal path and brings more discrete components onto the chip. This advanced chip supports both low speed and high speed signals required for Thunderbolt connectors.

  • LPC1102: ARM Cortex-M0 based 32-bit MCU

The LPC1102UK is an ARM Cortex-M0 microcontroller and it includes a 5-channel 10-bit ADC, one UART, one SPI, two 32-bit and two 16-bit timers, and one 24-bit system timer. SWD debugging and programming with four breakpoints and two watchpoints are also included. A total of eleven I/O functions also double as general purpose input and output GPIO for maximum flexibility. Offering very low power consumption with active mode current as low as 130 µA/MHz, the LPC1102UK features an internal IRC oscillator, accurate to ±1 percent over the industrial temperature and voltage range. It can also be clocked with an external source.

  • IP4294CZ10-TBR: ESD protection for ultra high-speed interfaces

The IP4294CZ10-TBR device protects high-speed interfaces such as Thunderbolt, SuperSpeed USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, eSATA and LVDS interfaces against ESD. The device includes four high-level ESD protection diode structures for ultra high-speed signal lines and is encapsulated in an ultra small and leadless XSON10 plastic package.

  • PESD5V0F1BLD: Single line bidirectional ESD protection for ultra high-speed interfaces

The PESD5V0F1BLD device offers an ultra low capacitance of only 0.4 pF typical and is therefore the ideal choice for protecting high-speed datalines against ESD strikes up to 10 kV. The ultra small dimensions of 1.0 x 0.6 mm and 0.37 mm height of the DFN1006D-2 package help designers to integrate it in very compact PCB designs and offer a high flexibility for routing.
