NXP Semiconductors, the newly independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today announced the industry’s first high-speed, high-performance 1.8V UART family that supports the VLIO™ bus specification from Marvell® as well as Intel and Motorola bus interfaces. The stand-alone 1.8V UART family from NXP features the smallest packaging currently available on the market. Running at 5Mbps and featuring a 128 byte FIFO, the four devices in the new NXP 1.8V UART family fully support advanced connectivity interfaces such as Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) and are perfect for next-generation portable devices running on 1.8V processors.
“The NXP 1.8V UART provides a seamless connection to Marvell’s PXA3xx application processor family via the VLIO bus interface,” said Gary Forni, director, Platform Enabling, Cellular and Handheld Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell. “With this high-speed, high-performance 1.8V UART family, NXP has delivered innovation to the interface market for applications requiring high speed options running on Marvell PXAxx platforms.”
“To meet the demands of emerging connectivity standards and next-generation portable devices running on 1.8V processors, our customers requested higher-performance, low-power UARTs.” said Dhwani Vyas, general manager, PL Interface Products, Business Line Standard ICs, NXP Semiconductors. “The NXP 1.8V UART family exceeds our customers’ connectivity and performance demands thanks to its 5Mbps data rate, 128 byte FIFO, and support of all major bus interfaces.”
The NXP 1.8V UART family is available in a TFBGA packaging that is only 3.5x3.5 to deliver the industry’s smallest UART form factor and allow for smaller designs of handheld devices. All devices in the family fully support Bluetooth EDR data rates, which only require 3Mbps at 1.8V while the family runs at 5Mbps. As an added benefit, the NXP 1.8V UART family provides long-distance communications through its automatic RS485 feature and ensures short-range wireless capabilities with its embedded IrDA encoder. These capabilities make the NXP 1.8V UART family ideal for portable devices such as smartphones, handheld gaming and GPS modules that need to interface with Bluetooth EDR and wireless modems.
About the NXP 1.8V UART Family
The NXP 1.8V UART family consists of four devices. The NXP SC16C850V and SC16C850L are one-channel UARTs, while the NXP SC16C852V and SC16C852L are two-channel UARTs. The NXP SC16C850V and SC16C852V support the VLIO interface while the NXP SC16C850L and SC16C852L support Intel or Motorola interfaces. In addition, all of the UARTs offer a fractional divider that allows an existing system clock to be used rather than an external crystal.
Availability
The NXP 1.8V UARTs are available immediately. More information about the NXP 1.8V UART family can be found at: www.nxp.com/interface.
