March 28, 2007

New system solutions for mainstream STB, DVR STB and HD IP-STB drive adoption of digital broadcast services in retail and pay-TV markets

CCBN, Beijing, China, March 28, 2007 – NXP, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today launched a new range of set-top box (STB) system solutions at market-leading price-points designed to accelerate the global adoption of digital terrestrial, cable, satellite and IP television services with the best possible picture quality. NXP’s new range of STBs, including the Nexperia STB225, STB220 and STB100 platforms, consists of highly customizable reference designs with built-in software applications and compliance with the latest industry standards, allowing device manufacturers to drastically reduce product development time, while enabling fast and easy user interface customization.

The leading Nexperia STB225 HD IP STB platform enables OEMs to deliver next generation multi-functional, high definition (HD) viewing experience for IPTV services at sub-USD70 bill-of-material (BOM) costs. The Nexperia STB220 with digital media adapter (DMA) and digital video recorder (DVR) capabilities allows manufacturers to offer set-top boxes at sub-USD120 and sub-USD100 BOM costs (including hard drive) respectively. The entry-level Nexperia STB100 enables set-top boxes to be developed for around USD20 BOM costs and is targeted at single-channel digital STB ‘Zapper Boxes’ and iDTV systems for free-to-air or pay television.

“With a greater choice of available content, it is important to ensure reliable access to multimedia features at price points that entice adoption of advanced TV services,” said Guus Frericks, general manager, set-top box and home media devices, NXP Semiconductors. “NXP’s new range of set-top box solutions breaks existing mass-market price points across the board and raises the bar for delivering the best possible TV viewing experience.”

“Reducing price points of STBs is among the key factors bolstering widespread adoption of IPTV and other STB services.” said Mark Kirstein, vice president, multimedia and services, iSuppli Corporation. ” Solutions like NXP’s new high-end STB platform allow manufacturers to quickly deliver IP-STBs to service providers at low price-points, making IPTV and a truly user-driven, multimedia experience a reality for consumers worldwide.”

NXP is powering the revolution in the TV viewing experience by delivering solutions that process all global digital formats, offer best possible picture quality and enable a variety of audio, video, data and images to be available anytime, anywhere throughout the home and on-the-move. The TV, including PC TV and TV-on-mobile, will soon be the window to a world of new content, and NXP is unique in supporting these developments with a full range of semiconductor components, system solutions and connected systems based on industry standards.
