NXP Launches Breakthrough New Online Design Tool for Power Management IC’s Compliant with PMBus Protocol Specifications

Innovative web-based design and monitoring solution set to reduce IC time to market

Eindhoven, The Netherlands - NXP Semiconductors, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, has launched an innovative new web-based design and monitoring solution for power management ICs. To help designers keep development time as short as possible, the tool provides comprehensive online design support and technology to create a one-stop shop for the full design cycle.

The online tool is an easy to use, accessible web browser-based configuration application to drive efficiency in the design process. NXP’s PIP8000 power-supply interface allows power supplies to be monitored, configured and sequenced in order to create a multi-purpose design environment. NXP customers can also use the tool to customize their design requirements virtually, significantly reducing development time. As well as real-time feedback facilities and diagnostics, the web tool offers the freedom to configure a power system in-line with PMBus command language and physical interface.

The online design tool can be used to control and monitor the power management application. Using a wide range of PMBus commands the user can quickly adjust voltage and current settings, control fan speed and monitor the power management system’s thermal behaviour as well as logging power system parameters. This enables the user to add full range of control option, including power sequencing, to an existing analog power solution.

Online design tool capabilities include:

  • Configurable GUI, (simulating PMBus host) which automatically locates all connected devices with verified NXP PIP8000 defaults

  • PMBus scripting and debug capabilities

  • Compliant to PMBus 1.1 command set

  • Support of linear and direct mode data formats, switched in real time

  • User commands and graph viewing includes: voltage, current, fans, and thermals

  • Fan controls allow switch-on/switch-off of up to two fans, as well as reading the fan speeds in RPM
