NXP Semiconductors joined hands with COSHIP, announced first silicon tuner powered cable set-top box (STB) solution in China

March 21, 2011

Shanghai, China, March 21, 2011 - NXP Semiconductors N.V. (Nasdaq: NXPI) announced that COSHIP Electronic Co. Ltd., one of the leading Chinese STB manufacturers, recently selected to apply NXP’s silicon tuner solution TDA18252 in its STB products. COSHIP is the first among those STB suppliers in China Cable market to use silicon tuner on the main board in cable solution and come to market in large scale.

The silicon tuner solution with TDA18252 has changed the traditional design mode of STB solutions. Traditional can tuner technology has been developed for 40 years, using up to more than 150 components, many of which require manual alignment during the manufacturing, while silicon tuner provides much higher level of integration, no longer needs low-noise amplifier (LNA), surface acoustic wave (SAW), reduces the number of peripheral components, and leads to higher system reliability.

Replacing can tuner with silicon tuner is a clear industry trend, as this move has already been done for Satellite and Terrestrial Set Top Boxes. For Cable STB, the move has already been made for the US, Latin America and Europe markets. For China, until now the traditional can tuner is widely used as the cable reception conditions are still not good at some places. Only silicon tuners that were used so far on this market are on the data reception over cable where corrupted data can be re-sent, whereas for video corrupted data means visible picture degradation or even lost picture.

Today, the NXP cable silicon tuner, which has been optimized according to the particular requirement of China market, has increased significantly in image transmission, and  therefore become a solution superior in an all-round way to traditional tuners in overall performance. The difference between the NXP tuner and the traditional tuner is that the performance of this solution outperforms the can tuner technology and allows putting the tuner function directly on the main board, whereas the traditional technology made mandatory the encapsulation into a module. Overall the application size for the silicon tuner only requires about one third of the size of the can tuner, and therefore makes multiple tuner applications possible in very small applications. The successful design of cable STBs by COSHIP with TDA18252 silicon tuner marks the start of large-scale market application of silicon tuner on cable STBs. As the technology and application are getting more mature and the overall costs are greatly cutting down, such design will be adopted by more mainstream STB vendors in China.
“COSHIP has been in partnership with NXP Semiconductors for years. During the adoption of the TDA 18252 silicon tuner, the technical support team of NXP China provided professional services through all design process. As the first Chinese vendor to adopt silicon tuner in cable STB, we will continue to cooperate with NXP to develop innovative applications with advanced technologies.” said the representative of COSHIP Electronic Co., Ltd.

“NXP Semiconductors has maintained great impetus in R&D and marketing of silicon tuner solutions. With increasing improvement of government efforts in market and relevant policies , the demand of China cable STB is growing rapidly. The result of cooperation between NXP Semiconductors and COSHIP is a very good start. We believe that more traditional STB vendors will adopt silicon tuners, and that the technical advancement of the whole industry will also be boosted.” said Wu Guohui, Marketing Director of TV Front-End and Multimedia Interface Products, NXP Semiconductors Greater China.

As a highly integrated silicon tuner that complies with the Chinese broadcast standards, TDA 18252 can receive digital cabal signals of multiple standards, and can thus bring great cost advantage and functional efficiency to OEMs and cable TV operators. With the spirits of continuous innovation and customer-orientation, NXP Semiconductors always keeps innovating in the silicon tuner market and launch new products to provide strong support for customers. For example, in March 2010, NXP launched TDA18250 to meet customers’ needs.
