Electronic control units for Automotive Customers can be RFID-enabled at a very early stage during production by embedding an RFID chip and antenna into or on the device‘s Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Uniquely identifying every product, this offers benefits throughout the product‘s lifecycle life from production to recycling.

Descriptive summary
Production control
The embedded RFID chip contains a UID (Unique IDentification number) that identifies each product. This can be used to track the status of the electronic device throughout the production line and be used for steering the production process. RFID chips offer significant advantages over barcode based tracking solutions. They contain read/write memory that can be used to store accompanying data about the product, like quality related production details (reel info, production date, passed quality checks, etc.) directly on the device. However, the biggest advantage of RFID is that it does not require line of sight and is also more robust in detection than traditional barcode systems. So the RFID chip can still be accessed even if the product is already packaged or build in the vehicle.
Quality management
Quality management In the automotive environment quality management gets more important every year. With the increasing amount of electronic control units traceability of this devices was put in the focus of the industry. With the possibility that each single device can be traced even if it is already molded into its housing offers a range of new possibilities in quality management. This development is also reflected in the industry which set up already two dedicated recommendations for traceability in the automotive industry: VDA Empfehlung 5510: RFID in der Baugruppenverfolgung VDA Empfehlung 5520: RFID in der Fahrzeugdistribution
Product authentication
More products in the automotive space (especially high value units), are particularly subject to counterfeit and grey markets. Embedded RFID chips provide an easy and quick way to detect counterfeits, by performing a simple authentication check with an RFID reader. This limits loss in brand reliability, accountability in case of malfunctions and finally loss of revenue.
