Enabling HD IP security cameras for networked surveillance (NXP at Security China 2012)

Ideal for security camera and surveillance applications

NXP provides a full range of single-chip video processors for HD IP security cameras. These devices integrate virtually all functions required for an IP camera design – from raw image sensor data input, image signal processing (ISP), and high level H.264 compression, to secure encrypted transmission over the IP network through a Gigabit Ethernet interface. NXP’s complete range of pin-2-pin compatible video processors support full HD video from 60 frames per second (ASC8852A) down to 1080p/30 fps (ASC8850A) and even 720p/45 fps (ASC8848A), all of which exhibit the same very high video quality, low power consumption and low bit rate. In addition to the high level H264 encoding, the devices also support a parallel stream for MJPEG encoding. The hardware H264 engine supports multi-stream encoding, which allows multiple substreams, or flexible coding options like for the ASC8848A device 720p/30 fps & D1/30 fps instead of 720p/45 fps, or 1080p/20 fps, or 5M/8 fps.

NXP provides “Standard” and “Advanced” IP camera processors. The “Advanced” versions of these IP surveillance camera products exhibit further improved image enhancement capabilities for low light conditions like 3D noise reduction, sharper edge enhancement and flexible 3A algorithm support (Auto Exposure, Auto White Balance and Auto focus). Also frame-rates up to 1080p/60 are supported by the most powerful model, the ASC8852A, which has a high profile L4.2 H.264 compression capability of 135 Mpix per second to provide a H.264 encoded 1080p/60 bit stream and a D1/30 substream in parallel. At the same time, these products remain fully pin-to-pin compatible with the standard IP camera products of NXP, enabling easy design upgrades without the need for hardware modifications.

Descriptive summary

Fully integrated solution for IP cameras

The NXP IP camera ICs support all the required functions of an IP camera in one single-chip design. They not only integrate video compression, but also handle the complete process for video image control and network transmission. These processors are fully integrated solutions for security IP cameras, taking the raw image output from the CMOS sensor, handling the tone mapping, optimizing the image, compressing the video into H.264, MPEG-4, or MJPEG, and then sending it over the network via the integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller.

NXP’s full HD security IP processors also have USB, SPI, and PCIe for additional connectivity options, including 802.11, GPRS, and WiMAX, or local storage. The 4 UARTs and 20 GPIO support PTZ or other control functions. The I2S interface can be used for local audio recording and playback. A video output is available to display the captures video for local view. They achieve high video quality, even under low-light conditions through high resolution tone mapping, and can automatically adjust the exposure and enable pixel binning.
