The Nexperia PNX831x series offer straightforward solutions for low cost, but feature-rich digital set top boxes (STB) and integrated digital TV (iDTV) systems. These products are equally suited to basic 'Zapper' boxes and mid-range STBs for Free-to-Air or Pay Television reception, which include Pay Per View (PPV), e-shopping and t-commerce capabilities.
The PNX831x series delivers high performance due to the combination of a unified memory architecture (UMA), a 16-bit high-speed memory bus, an embedded 8 KB unified cache, a 4 KB deeply embedded memory and NXP's patented memory arbitration, which enables best use of the 120 MHz 32-bit MIPS RISC CPU core (PR1910).
Furthermore, in conjunction with the embedded MPEG-2 decoder, audio DSP, graphics engine and digital video encoder, the MIPS CPU carries out all STB functions, with additional functionality made possible by connecting peripherals through popular interfaces such as UARTs and a USB 1.1 host.
Designed to keep all manufacturing costs down, the PNX831x series also allows manufacturers to use only a single SDRAM memory in one of three possible configurations (8 MB, 16 MB or 32 MB). The MIPS 16 instruction set enables further cost savings by allowing a reduction by up to 40% of the FLASH size (code compression), making 2MB of Flash memory sufficient in most cases. For optimum performance, the code is decompressed at boot-up into SDRAM from where it is executed. In addition, its SQFF208 package permits the use of dual layer printed circuit board.
For the low-end cable market, the
Nexperia Cable STB system solution offers a highly affordable and extremely efficient solution for a variety of digital STB and TV applications.
