C. V. Jagadish | CEO, Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company (SSMC), Singapore

SSMC is our manufacturing joint venture in Singapore, and, like all our manufacturing sites, takes their savings in energy, water, and waste very seriously. For C. V. Jagadish, the CEO of SSMC, looking for ways to improve efficiency is nothing new.

“We‘ve had clear direction for our environmental action plan for some time,” he explains. “We set targets for 2002 to 2005, and in 2006 we renewed the plan and our commitments for the coming four-year period of 2007-2010, . as defined by the EcoVision program.”

The factory already has recycling programs in place for office paper, cardboard boxes, glass, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans. But that‘s far from all. The site‘s water-saving efforts over the last four years have already yielded reductions of 418,744 m3 of water per year, which is equivalent to 168 Olympic-size swimming pools. The site has saved 10,578,199 kWh of electricity per year, which is the same as the total annual consumption of 2,248 local four-room flats. “And our use of hydrochloric acids, sodium hydroxide, and other chemicals has been reduced by as much as 550 . metric tons per year,” adds C. V.

“We‘re always looking for ways to do things better,” he says. He cites . smaller projects, such as the reuse of IC packages in the Failure Analysis Laboratory, and 100% recycling of cardboard in the warehouse, as examples of small changes that can deliver big improvements. On a larger scale, . the site is focused on reducing slurry waste, which is a major contributor . to the fab‘s landfill waste. Says C. V., “There are lots more activities underway that will do even more to reduce our environmental footprint.”
