Bernd Schepers | Risk Management, NXP Hamburg, Germany
In 2000, the Bureau of Occupational Health and Safety in Hamburg awarded the site a certificate for an “exemplary health and safety system,” and, in 2004, the site was certified by the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (in accordance with OHSAS 18001) for its “commitment to an employee-driven approach and its systematic, continuous improvement of working conditions.“
The site's recognition is the direct result of careful planning and a dedication to occupational health, environmental protection, and social justice. Says Bernd, “These things are important factors in all our decisions, even those driven by economic concerns.”
Most recently, the site has implemented a carefully monitored program. in the areas of accident control and prevention. The results have been excellent, with a 2006 accident rate of only 8.9 per 1,000 employees. That's nearly half the industry average of 15.6 for all companies insured by Germany's Accident-prevention and Insurance Union for Fine Mechanics and Electrical Engineering (Berufsgenossenschaft der Feinmechanik und Elektrotechnik, BGFE).
“Our work goes on,” says Bernd. “The level of health and safety sanctions has continuously improved and developed. We are constantly striving for excellence in the areas of health and safety. It takes a lot of work, but it's worth it.”
