To assist victims of the terrible Sichuan earthquake, Sound Solutions Beijing, along with NXP sites in Beijing, Hong Kong, Jilin, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, made sizable donations to the Red Cross and other aid organizations. In all, the combined total of the donations, made by employees and the company itself, amounted to close to RMB 2 million. Sound Solutions Beijing also donated to SOS Children‘s Village, an international organization dedicated to family-based, long-term care of foster children. Many of the offices in Greater China have started campaigns to save resources and reduce waste. There are, for example, dedicated recycling bins for paper, and employees are encouraged to re-use paper, avoid color printing, and consider two-sided printing whenever possible. To save electricity, lights are only kept on during business hours, and office equipment is shut down during weekends and holidays. Employees are encouraged to use washable cups instead of disposable ones, to buy office products that can be recycled, and to use pens with changeable cartridges. The air conditioning has been adjusted to use less energy, and there are dedicated boxes for battery recycling. NXP held its second annual Innovator‘s Challenge, a competition that encourages excellence in electronics design. From the hundreds of proposals received from more than 90 universities and colleges in Greater China, NXP selected 30 semi-finalists. All semi-finalists receive sponsorship for their designs along with development advice and counsel on practical applications. The company also continued its program for summer interns, providing university students with work experience such as collecting and analyzing market data, or working in various labs. To increase awareness of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) issues, several sites in Greater China hold regular fire drills. The Shanghai site organized workshops to teach employees how to protect themselves and rescue others who are wounded during an emergency. The Shanghai site also held a workshop on ergonomics, teaching employees how to avoid occupational illnesses. Similar workshops will be held in Shenzhen and Beijing. The Shanghai site‘s staff club in Shanghai continues to organize volunteer activities throughout the year, such as visiting a school for the disabled in Zhabei district. Building on the good relationship they've established with local government, the site participated in various community-based events, including a tree-planting activity and a book-donation program. The site has also donated money to a local senior center. As part of the government-sponsored “New Dongguan Citizen Development Project,” 205 employees received certificates from the project's computer-training course. Also, the site's new “In-house Diploma Program,” a business-administration curriculum designed in cooperation with South China Normal University and Huangjiang Adult Cultural Technical School, has accepted more than 30 employees who, having passed their entrance exams, will begin coursework in 2008. |

France
NXP France takes a comprehensive approach to sustainability, with an extensive list of programs that support community involvement, including educational programs and charity work.
Education
NXP France has close ties with several universities and research labs. NXP recently gave its name to the 48th student/engineer promotion at ENSI, and two of the top students were former NXP trainees (one of them has since been recruited to Caen).
NXP France sponsors the NXP Caen Thesards Club, an association for PhD candidates that helps students share information and experiences with each other and with NXP employees. The association arranges professional, cultural, and social events, and gives students the opportunity to present their work in a forum called Live Sessions.
Together with Silicon Laboratories, Oberthur, and France Telecom, NXP France has worked with the engineering school of ENSICAEN to develop a specialized mater's degree for Microelectronics System Design & Technology.
For younger students, NXP France funds international classes at the Henri Brunet Secondary and Primary School in Caen. Pupils follow the usual French national curriculum, with an extra four to six hours of English language and two hours of history and geography. The classes are taught by specialists in each subject who are also native speakers of English.
NXP France is also an active participant in the Relais de Sciences, a science competition based in Caen.
Charity work
In Suresnes, employees collected Christmas gifts for two children‘s organizations. Staff at the Caen site continued their long-standing tradition of donating blood to a local blood bank. The number of employees participating in blood drives has continued to increase in recent years. |
NXP France also had teams participating in events that raised money for schools in Senegal and Telecom Sans Frontieres, a humanitarian organization specializing in emergency telecommunications. NXP France designates the first week in April as Sustainable Development Week. The week includes several charitable activities and raises awareness throughout the French divisions. During the 2007 event, for example, employees from around the country brought in obsolete mobile phones and accessories so that they could be donated to the charity Emmaüs, an association that helps in cases of extreme poverty. More than 400 items were collected. In June 2007, NXP France sponsored the “IT Cup”, an inter-company football (soccer) competition that involves teams from Information and Technology companies across France. Money collected from the games was donated to Télécoms sans Frontière (Telecoms without Borders), an NGO that caters to urgent telecommunications needs in places affected by natural disaster, war, or food shortage. |
The Sophia site sponsored a team of students in the &ldquo4L Trophy”, a humanitarian off-road race that sends classic Renault 4L cars across the desert to deliver school supplies to Moroccan children. It was NXP‘s fifth year as a sponsor, and NXP‘s 2008 entrant, bearing NXP colors, successfully delivered their assigned 50 kg of equipment after tens days of travel. In November 2007, NXP France worked with the Médico Lions Club, a charitable organization that distributes used eyeglasses to people in developing countries, and collected 358 pairs of glasses from employees. |
At the Caen site in 2007, the Côte de Nacre group and the R&D Center made several donations. They gave 250 computer monitors to organizations (Emmaüs and la Banque Alimentaire) that help people in need, they donated furniture to local schools and associations through the “Positive Deconstruction” program, and they donated employee-provided toys to the pediatrics division of a local hospital. They also participated in the Bouchons d'Amour (Bottlecaps of Love) initiative, which uses the proceeds from recycled plastic bottlecaps to benefit the handicapped and the children of Madagascar. Since September 2007, the site has already collected 60 kilos of caps. At the Le Mans site, several NXP employees ran the Virades de l'Espoir (“Pathways to Hope”), a race that benefits research on the disease cystic fibrosis. At Suresnes, the Information Technology (IT) department continued its unique program for donating to a local children's hospital. Each year, the group organizes a sale that gives employees a chance to buy obsolete computer equipment. The money from the sale is then donated to the Doctor Souris (“Doctor Mouse”) program, which uses the funds to provide computers to long-term patients in the children's house at Kremlin-Bicetre hospital. NXP expanded their donation with wireless adaptors for laptops and memory sticks, so the children can stay in touch with family and friends while they're in hospital. |
Germany
Partnering with three schools in Hamburg, the site conducts several activities aimed at increasing local enrollment in physics and the information sciences. NXP engineers build robots with teachers and kids, and invite students to build and test their own acceleration sensors. Hamburg employees participated in a “Bike to Work” contest, organized by the German Bicycle Club (AFC) and AOK Health Insurance. The contest encourages employees to bike to work and raises money for local charities. The Hamburg team raised EUR 5,000 for a local welfare foundation, called Alsterdorf Stiftung, which cares for handicapped and disadvantaged people. Hamburg employees also ran in a charity race to support “Children Helping Children,” an organization that helps disadvantaged young people and children with disabilities. The NXP team, with nearly 180 participants, was the largest corporate team to run the race. At Christmas time, employees donated gifts to needy children and, in addition, raised EUR 5,000 for the foundation that organized the Christmas campaign. |

Education is the primary focus for NXP Germany's community-based efforts, and the site is active in several educational programs that generate enthusiasm for science and technologies. Working at the university level, NXP sponsors students at the Northern Institute of Technology, an elite school that combines a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) with a full technical program (Master of Science). NXP has been involved with the school since 2002 and typically sponsors one student per year. As part of their studies, sponsored students intern at NXP for twelve months to gain practical experience. 2007 was the first year for another scholarship program, supporting students at Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH). The new program awards a scholarship to two top-performing candidates in the Electrical Engineering and Information Engineering master's program and includes preferred options for thesis projects and the chance to work at NXP while enrolled in the program. The new scholarship reinforces NXP's already close relationship with TUHH. Since 2001, NXP has held a career day at the school, creating strong ties between the institution and the company, and fostering a strong employer image among their engineering students. |
2007 was the first year for another new program, called the NXP Robo Cup, which is designed to reach students at Hamburg University specializing in computer sciences and programming. Teams of students build and code their own robots to play soccer, then play against each other for a prize from NXP. Working at the pre-University level, the site worked with VDE, an association for electrical engineering, electronics, and information technology, and the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education to sponsor “Invent a Chip,” a competition that gives roughly 1,500 students the chance to design and realize their own microchips. |
To encourage young women to pursue careers in technology, NXP held, for the seventh time, a “Girls Day”, in which about 100 girls are invited to spend a day onsite, working alongside engineers and observing chip production. Charitable works included donating funds for leukemia and cancer research in Aurich, selling outdated computers at a charity auction in Hamburg, and donating money, earmarked for a Christmas party at the now-closed Boeblingen site, to a children's cancer hospital in Tuebingen. Also, to emphasize good health, fourteen NXP employees participated in the 72-km “Ems-Jade-Lauf” marathon from Emden to Wilhemshaven. |
Hong Kong
NXP Hong Kong is deeply involved with the Caring Company, which is part of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, an umbrella organization that includes more than 300 NGOs providing more than 90% of Hong Kong's social-welfare services. The Council, along with its members, promotes service improvement, facilitates cross-sector partnership, and advocates equality, justice, social integration, and a caring society. In 2007, NXP Hong Kong was recognized for its contributions with a Caring Company award. |

Netherlands, Nijmegen
In March, on National Tree Planting Day, a group of fifty young people, representing the group “Neighborhood Rangers” planted 100 oak trees at the NXP Nijmegen site. The trees, which are hardy and long-lived are expected, over the next century, to remove roughly twelve thousand tons of CO2 from the air. The site replaced its multimedia library, which housed 13,000 books, with access to the Internet. The site donated all 13,000 books to Sakina Azher Technical College, in Bangladesh, and the Bangladesh University. |
As part of its many educational outreach programs, the site supports local college students by sponsoring independent research projects, making guest lectures, hosting educational excursions, and participating in career days. The Nijmegen site also launched a special website to promote technology and the company‘s support for education. The site lists the schools and activities that NXP has been involved with, and gives suggestions for promoting technology at the elementary and high-school levels. More than twenty NXP employees were guest speakers at nine local elementary schools during the year, helping students understand what it‘s like to run a business. Sponsored the winning team in the High Tech Challenge, a technology competition for second- and thirid-year secondary school students. The site participates in several educational outreach programs, including guest lectures, hosting educational excursions, participating in career days, and sponsoring various student activities. For example, the site supports local college students with independent research projects, and sponsored the winning team in the High Tech Challenge, a technology competition for secondary-school students. More than 20 NXP employees were guest lecturers at nine local elementary schools, discussing what it‘s like to run a business. The Nijmegen group recently launched a website that promotes these activities, listing the schools and activities that NXP has been involved with, and offering suggestions for promoting technology at the elementary and secondary-school levels. Combining good health with a good cause, the site participated in the annual “Fietsen Scoort” (“Cycling Scores”) bicycle race, a charitable race organized by COS Nederland, Oxfam, and the Dutch cycling union. The race, which raises money for sustainability projects in the third world, is also encourages people to avoid using cars, thus reducing emissions at home while aiding projects abroad. In 2007, 144 NXP employees cycled for a total of 350,000 kms, raising enough money to support projects that will prevent roughly 70 tons of CO2 emissions. In a separate event, during “Week van de Vooruitgang” (“Week of Progress”), members of the Nijmegen site cycled in another race, competing against other cities, including Eindhoven and Utrecht, to accumulate the most kilometers ridden. The city of Nijmegen won, with a total of 8,500 km cycled. |
Philippines
The NXP Cabuyao site donated computer equipment to a school, attended by about 300 children, in a village that had been hard hit by floods during a recent typhoon. The town was chosen, in part, because it is where Ray Capinianes, the General Manager of the Cabuyao site, grew up. At the donation ceremony, which was attended by nearly all the local residents, Rey delivered an inspiring speech in which he described his humble roots and encouraged students to follow their own paths to success. |
The site won its third award for Outstanding Community Projects from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), which recognizes organizations for their close relationships with local communities. Having won three of these awards, NXP Cabuyao has been placed in the PEZA Hall of Fame. In 2009, the site granted Academic Excellence Awards to local schoolchildren. In November 2006, typhoon Durian caused devastating floods and landslides in Albay Province, about 500 km from the NXP Philippines site. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of families were displaced. Shortly after the disaster, about 40 NXP employees volunteered in a relief operation that provided food and other basic needs. In total, 2,500 families and flood/landslide victims received goods directly distributed by NXP. |
The assistance continued into 2007, when about 20 NXP employees partnered with roughly 25 teachers and students from the Social Works Department of Bicol University to provide farm cooperatives with badly needed equipment and livestock. Two hundred farmers in four cooperatives benefited from NXP's involvement, receiving machinery and carabaos, a species of water buffalo used as a draught animal. In addition to the hands-on efforts of NXP's volunteers, roughly 70% of the site's 6,000 employees donated a total of $25,000 to the relief efforts. The company matched employee donations and also supplied computers for the farm-relief project. |
Singapore
For the ninth straight year, NXP Singapore sponsored a charity golf tournament, called “HeartWare”. Through the participation of some 80 people from 31 companies, the event raised SD 45,000, bringing the total amount raised, since HeartWares inception, to roughly SD 350,000. Since 2005, SSMC has worked with two educational institutions to organize a coastal clean-up. In 2007, 50 volunteers, including SSMC “Green Staff” and students from the two institutions, worked to improve the Pasir Ris beach and mangrove area. The SSMC employees gain a day outside and the students learn the importance of a clean environment. In addition to the clean-up effort, SSMC also worked with Meridian Junior College in 2007 to develop a site map for the Pasir Ris mangrove swamps, a new conservation area. The objective is to increase public awareness of important natural resources and educate young people how to contribute to the community. The Singapore Environment Council's Green Volunteer Network was also involved in the project, providing expertise in mapping and detailed trail information. |
The SSMC site's commitment to Student Care Services (SCS) dates back to 2003. Since then, they have provided direct social-work services and financial support to students in the SCS program, along with, for example, sponsorship of a guided reading program that enhances reading and comprehension skills, and funding for overseas trips that foster independence and build social skills.
SSMC has a comprehensive Training and Education Program in place that guides their work with various educational institutions. The company donates books and scholarships to deserving students and local universities and polytechnics, and holds a yearly “Career Familiarization Program” and periodic Open Houses that expose students to opportunities in technology and general and with NXP in particular. The Industrial Attachment Program oversees ongoing placement of students and is another way of attracting talent to the company. Subscribing to the philosophy that “life is blood,” SSMC is a regular contributor to the Singapore Red Cross Society, and has been involved with their annual blood-donation drives since 2002. The company holds its own blood-donation drives twice a year, and averages the remarkably high rate of 80% employee participation. |
SSMC also supports the government's active promotion of the arts and has sponsored the NAFA Fine Arts Awards, a contest that encourages young artists, since 2006.
Switzerland
NZP Zurich, like other Swiss companies, supports employees who engage in civil service, social, or community work and pays them for their time in these activities. Roughly one in every four employees takes advantage of the program. One day per year, employees are invited to bring their children to work and see what their parents do for a living, and there is an annual event that invites retired employees to return to the site so they can keep current with the company's status and keep social connections fresh. To save energy and the environment, the company offers a travel subsidy for employees who use public transport instead of a private car for their daily commute to work. The company offers three grades of onsite German classes, free of charge, to foreign engineers and their spouses, and funds employees who want to take other kinds of courses offsite.
To foster close ties with the local government, representatives from Human Resources (HR) meet every six months with members of Zurich's governmental work authorities to present relevant activities and projects, such as plans for expansion or the need for additional work permits. Between face-to-face meetings, the group holds regularly scheduled conference calls. The HR group also keeps in regular contact with the Labor Market Authorities.
On the educational front, NXP Zurich is involved with local technical high schools and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETII). NXP meets with various professors from ETII's Electrical Engineering department once a year, and in 2007 gave a CHF 5,000 prize for the best graduate. In 2008, they plan to sponsor “Venture 2008,” an ETII project that mentors young entrepreneurs who want to start their own companies. At the high-school level, NXP Zurich gives an annual presentation to all third-year students a one school, and invites students from another for an annual day-long visit to NXP. Also in 2007, NXP Zurich sponsored four apprentices, two in electronics and two in administration, and contributed CHF 20,000 to IAESTE, a group that funds international student exchange.
Taiwan, Kaohsiung
In 2008, the site supported an NXP Talent Scholarship Program and, as part of a breakthrough branding campaign, attended a job fair with a “Charming NXP Sweetheart”. NXP Taiwan has been active in educational programs for several years. The Talent Scholarship Program, for example, is now in its sixth year. Through the program, students at the Masters Degree level complete for scholarships in technology and management. Eight scholarships of TWD 50,000 are awarded each year. The program has given valuable experience to nearly 100 students, and seven winners from previous years have now joined NXP. The NXP-sponsored VLSI Design/CAD Symposium, now in its fourth year, had 600 attendees in 2007, bringing together NXP employees, engineering professors, and graduates to present and discuss advanced research papers. The site also supports a joint Masters program in Electrical Engineering, partnering with a local university to provide tuition for students who will work at NXP after graduation. |
Other educational programs include summer internships for university-level and graduate students, a program that has been in place since 2004. The site also scheduled onsite visits hosted by NXP employees. In 2007, the site arranged a company introduction and factory/warehouse tours for seven groups of students studying electrical engineering and logistics, giving them a rare opportunity to see theories put in practice.
The site also continued its tradition of having monthly “Coffee Days” at a nearby park. During the event, which is held in partnership with a local school for handicapped children, employees are encouraged to take a break from their busy schedules and enjoy free coffee, desserts, live piano music, free massages, manicures, and a charity bazaar selling handicrafts made by the children. In late March 2007, NXP Taiwan's Spring Walk 2007 in Kaohsiung looked like it was going to be rained out, but the clouds cleared and the sun shone through just in time for the 4,000 participants, including NXP employees and their families, to enjoy their walk along the Lianchihtan (Lotus Pond). After enjoying the scenery, children and their parents had snacks and participated in various creative activities and games. Attendees had access to free blood-pressure tests and received the day's most popular item - a balloon marked with the NXP logo. |
United Kingdom, Southampton
In 2008, the site sponsored and organized a competition, designed to promote learning and development, involving teams from six schools.
NXP sponsored Peter Gould, of the NXP Southampton site, to run the London Marathon. His participation in the race raised funds for the British Heart Foundation and the Anthony Nolan Trust, a charity that focuses bone marrow transplants and leukemia research.
USA, Fishkill
NXP Fishkill, in America's state of New York, had an active schedule of community-improvement activities in 2007. To promote education, they sponsored the New Faces of Engineering Day at State University of New York (SUNY, New Paltz), and sent dozens of NXP volunteers to help roughly 1200 student attendees during laboratory workshops. They also staffed an NXP booth that shared information about the company, careers in engineers, and semiconductor manufacturing. The site also provided financial and volunteer support, in the form of judges, at a local science fair, and sponsored an “Arts in Education” award issued by a local government organization.
To promote good health and to extend community relations, the site sponsored teams in two foot races for charity. In the first race, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the NXP team raised over $3,500 in donations (in addition to the corporate donation), and won the “Most Team Spirit” award at the event. For the second race, the American Heart Association's Heart Walk, NXP sponsored a team of twelve walkers who raised additional funds beyond NXP's corporate donation, and were awarded the “Top Team Total Raised (Manufacturing Division)” for 2007. In another community-outreach project, NXP sponsored a “Rebuilding Together” project, which saw a team of twelve NXP volunteers working to revitalize the home of a local resident. The twelve-hour day included work on new floors, windows, plumbing, and significant repairs to the home's exterior porch. Volunteers even worked to make the new home more inviting, with a new rocking chair and flowers to decorate the renovated entryway. To celebrate Earth Day, employees helped distribute thousands of tree seedlings. The NXP team staffed an information booth that gave information about sustainability practices and projects, and conducted informational sessions at the site itself, giving employees tips for ways to incorporate “green” habits in daily work and at home. Charitable donations during 2007 included a gift to the United Way, an international philanthropy organization dedicated to local causes, that included corporate and employee donations. In addition, the site also gave to other local, state, and national groups, such as the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, Hudson Valley Scholars at Marist College, the DCC College Fund, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Pitch for Kids Fund. |
