Netherlands, Nijmegen

This manufacturing site has established emergency response teams for their factory. The teams are being trained to extinguish a fire, be familiar with evacuation procedures, perform life-saving acts, and give directions in case of evacuation. They're also learning several techniques for first aid, including use of a defibrillator. They have identified 'first responders' who can arrive on-scene quickly and can administer first aid, and they have trained fifteen factory employees (three per shift) to help victims who have been exposed to hazardous substances. They have established a Crisis Organization, consisting of a tactical team, for small-scale incidents without consequences for the environment, and a strategic team, for large-scale incidents that may have an impact on the environment and the business.

The site recorded only seven personnel injuries during 2008. It is the first time, since the site began keeping records, that they've recorded fewer than 10 injuries. In 1993, when recordkeeping began, the site recorded 86 injuries.

China, Jilin

On April 25, 2008, the manufacturing site at Jilin proved that it puts safety first by achieving an incident-free record of 1,500,000 man hours. This remarkable statistic is evidence that the site's many Health & Safety programs are highly successful. A management-staffed Safety Committee implements a patrol-inspection system, along with weekly departmental inspections and monthly inspections of the company as a whole. The site uses a Corrective Action Request (CAR) system to continuously update their Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) systems, and closely monitors the quality of the work environment to ensure a high work/safety coefficient. Safety awareness is a constant, and the high incident-free record is a clear indication that employees are committed to keeping the workplace free from danger. An emphasis on environmental protection is expanding the site's focus, and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth.

Early in 2007, to highlight environmental protection, industrial safety, and healthy practices, the manufacturing site dedicated an entire week to Environment, Health & Safety (EHS). The week-long campaign was supported by the slogan “Practice EHS and Challenge the OHSAS 18001,” and included a variety of activities. Employees participated in several challenges, competing to create a winning model slogan, an ID improvement case, and a billboard concept. There was also an internal OHSAS audit, an emergency evacuation exercise, various training and publicity programs, and an awards ceremony.

The site sets a high standard for health and fitness, going beyond legal requirements for how often employees are required to get periodic and specific health exams. Employees under the age of 45 are expected to have a general physical exam every two years (instead of every five years, as required by law), and employees above the age of 45 and at grade 070 or above are asked to have a general exam once a year instead of every three. For employees being treated for specific conditions, such as airborne particles or noise, an exam is required every year instead of every two.

In December 2007, the site held its first-ever Sport Day, assembling six teams from manufacturing to compete in a series of athletic events, including a relay race, and a tug-of-war. There was also a year-end raffle that offered prizes with healthy themes. The event was a fun way for employees to showcase their health and fitness, and symbolized NXP's ability to compete on a global scale.

To promote healthy lifestyles, the site has in-house doctors who counsel on preventing chronic illnesses and making healthy choices. The site also partners with a local hospital to provide bi-annual health screenings for all employees. Special screenings that involve tests for ear, lung, and heart health are provided to factory workers. In 2007, the site conducted an anti-smoking campaign, supported by local pharmacies that offered extended programs and other alternatives to smoking.

To promote workplace safety, the site has several training programs in place, including Safety Orientation Training for all personnel, even contractors, and the site conducts annual fire and ERT drills.

To promote work-life balance, the site organized a series of recreational activities, under the theme “SSMC Cares,” a slogan developed by the Sports and Recreation Committee. Activities included a wakeboarding trip and classes for salsa dancing, yoga, inline skating, wine tasting and tea appreciation. Inter-departmental competitions for chess, soccer, badminton, and table tennis, served to enhance teambuilding and introduce employees to coworkers in other department.

The site observes the National Family Celebrations, which encourages employees to spend more time with their families, and lets employees go home early on the designated “Family Day.” In another family-oriented activity, the site held a poster competition, inviting the children of employees to submit health-related slogans. The winning theme was “Think Family, Think Safety.”

China: Guangdong is a workplace, recreation center and learning Institute

NXP Semiconductors Guangdong (APG) has 2,500 employees, more than 2,000 of whom are staying in the dormitory facility located on-site on the plant premises. So, providing a good living environment is one of the company's key success factors. In 2005 a recreation center was established, followed in 2006 by the forming of employee interest associations, for activities such as hobbies and sports. Employee training is also a high priority, with 86% of employees completing the 40-hour training target in 2006. This covered subjects such as Environment and Quality systems, team building and leadership training. The company also provides a special education fund to help employees improve their academic and professional qualifications.
