Introduction

NXP‘s Suppliers and the NXP Business Code of Conduct

NXP‘s commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and the pursuit of a sustainable future - economic, social and environmental - is reflected in the NXP Business Code of Conduct (BCC) and the related Directives. The NXP BCC set out guiding principles on integrity and ethics in business conduct, including those that help create a sustainable supply chain.

In short, NXP pursues mutually beneficial relationships with its Suppliers and seeks to award business to those Suppliers who are committed to acting fairly and with integrity towards their stakeholders, to observing the applicable rules of law and to supporting and respecting internationally proclaimed human rights.

The Supplier Sustainability Program

As laid out in the NXP Business Code of Conduct and the NXP Purchasing & Supply Management Code, our supply managers must select Suppliers and business partners in accordance with these principles and this Code. A Supplier Sustainability Program has been put in place for this purpose.

The Program is based on the NXP Supplier Sustainability Code, as set out in two documents: the NXP Supplier Declaration on Sustainability and the NXP list of Hazardous Substances in Products and Packaging. The Code constitutes an integral part of our Purchase Agreements and Purchase Orders.

Suppliers meet our sustainability criteria when no major areas of non-compliance are found and when their approach to - and deployment of - sustainability management are in line with our expectations.

Tools used for the execution of the Program are activities to raise awareness and supplier sustainability self-assessment and audit tools, based on the tools developed by the EICC. Audits will be conducted by either NXP auditors or EICC-certified auditors.

Raising awareness

Awareness and engagement are key in building a sustainable electronics industry. NXP holds training sessions, Supplier events and specific briefings to raise awareness and create engagement to promote sustainable business conduct. By joining the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition, we aim to strengthen our activities in this area through participation in several EICC programs. We will also continue to hold training sessions on the NXP Supplier Sustainability Program for our employees, including internal auditors, HR, quality management, site management, business groups, supply managers and other stakeholders.

For the Supplier, the Lead Buyer will remain most visible as he or she plays a pivotal role in the implementation and monitoring of individual Supplier sustainability activities.

The Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition

The EICC is a group of companies working together to create a comprehensive set of tools and methods that support credible implementation of the EICC Code of Conduct throughout the Electronics and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) supply chain.

NXP fully supports the vision and goals of the EICC:

  • Vision: Through the application of high standards we can create better social, economic and environmental outcomes for all those involved in the Electronics and ICT supply chains. This includes increased efficiency and productivity for customers and suppliers, improved conditions for workers, economic development and a cleaner environment for local communities.
  • Mission: To deliver these benefits through a shared approach to implementing the EICC Code of Conduct. This approach will reduce duplication, focus efforts on positive social and environmental change, build supply chain capabilities in social responsibility and employ a process that solicits feedback from stakeholders.

NXP commits to conform to the EICC Code of Conducts in its own operations, progressively implementing the EICC approach and tools in the spirit of the industry‘s common goals.

NXP also commits to progressively apply the EICC Code of Conduct to its first tier suppliers, to monitor its application to the best of its ability using EICC practices and tools, and to encourage and support its suppliers to do the same.

Membership in the EICC is open to all to electronic manufacturers, software firms, ICT firms, and manufacturing service providers, including contracted labor, that design, market, manufacture and/or provide electronic goods.
Current member firms (as of September 2008) consist of Acer, Adobe, AMD, Analog Devices, Apple, Applied Materials, Best Buy, Celestica, Cisco, Dell, EMC2, Flextronics, Foxconn, HP, IBM, Intel, Jabil, Kodak, Lenovo, Lexmark, Lite-On, Logitech, Micron, Microsoft, Numonyx, NXP Semiconductors, Nvidia, Pegatron, Philips, Quanta, Samsung, Sanmina-SCI, Seagate, Solectron, Sony, Spansion, STMicroelectronics, Sun Microsystems, Talison, Tellabs, Venture, Western Digital and Xerox.
