Industry 4.0 is about sensing and collecting data in an industrial production environment. The data collection serves multiple goals, from process monitoring to process improvement and self-diagnostics.
Ideally an industry 4.0 factory is created from scratch, but this is not the economic reality, where production machinery are capital investments and very often are used for decades. Early detection of anomalies allows preventive maintenance and avoids production losses.
In rotating machines like wheel bearings and motors, these anomalies show up via abnormal vibrations and temperature increases. The anomalies do not happen in a sudden way but grow over time and these first indications will be detected when reaching a threshold.
A small and lightweight sensing tag based on the NTAG SmartSensor provides a way to add sensory and logging capabilities to existing machinery without disturbing or interfering during normal operations. Thanks to the low power operation, these tags can operate for 6 or more months. Via NFC, the collected anomaly data can be readout and used to plan the next maintenance.
