Worldwide, the population is aging. Together with living longer, people get more chronic deceases. A lot of those deceases can be treated with medication, meaning that the life-threatening aspects of that decease can be lowered or postponed.
Unfortunately, both for the individual as for society, patients do not adhere to their treatment. People stop taking their pills. Studies worldwide show this behavior, and for the United States alone, this non-compliancy is estimated to cost almost 289 billion of USD and causes 125000 deaths per year.
Technology as such will not solve this non-compliancy, but with the use of NFC-enabled smart phones and smart blisters, patients get pill reminders according to their prescription. If patients doubt, they can check whether they took their pill already. In this way, people are stimulated to adhere, and it also avoids overdose mistakes.
With the NTAG SmartSensor, it is possible to create a smart blister that monitors the pill taking. Thru the NFC interface, the data is uploaded into the smart phone app. That data can be relayed into the cloud towards caregivers who can follow-up and coach patients.
Thanks to the flexibility of the NTAG SmartSensor, solution partners and sellers can easily create derivatives with our examples in the SDKs: a smart pill bottle counting and storing each time a pill is taken out.
