A smart home gateway is an appliance that bridges a Wide Area Network (WAN/ Cloud) connection to a Local Area Network, usually Wi-Fi and/or Ethernet-based, in the home or customer premises. The WAN connection is typically a Fiber, Cable or xDSL connected to the gateway via a modem or PHY. The gateway functions include WAN to LAN bridging, Network Address Translation (NAT), IPv4 and IPv6 forwarding, Wireless Access Point management and voice over IP (VoIP) processing.
Additional functions may also be integrated such as a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to support Video on Demand services or local caching of web pages or other content. Customers are increasingly looking to integrate low power radios such as Bluetooth, IEEE802.15.4 in the home gateway to allow connectivity with Internet of Things (IoT) devices for home automation and home security services. Near Field Communications (NFC) readers enhance ease of use by enabling simple “tap to pair” and “tap to personalize” use-cases.
