NXP® has a proven track record on high-efficiency, low-power standby power supply solutions. Our Type-C wall charger utilizes our latest solutions to enable USB Power Delivery PD 2.0 up to 5 A and 20 V. This allows USB connections to complement data exchange with high power charging capabilities.
The Type-C connector supports a new level of charging capability, referred to as USB Power Delivery or USB PD.
The PD format runs at up to 100 W, which is suitable for use with 5, 12, and 20 V systems – a big step up from the traditional USB battery charger or BC spec. Our application outlines how you can now build USB Type-C wall chargers that rapidly charge larger batteries, or can even power a hub or display.
Multiple output voltages defined in the USB-PD standard provide a new challenge for designers to meet energy regulations like Energy star, the US Department of Energy (DoE) regulation and the European Code of Conduct (CoC). Our application example is very flexible, able to work with NXP or any 3rd party MCU via SPI or I2C interface. It includes power control and related functions, and VBUS (3.7-25 V) for local supply along with baseband PD functions.
