A long-time leader in USB systems and member of the USB-IF, NXP® helped define the Type-C specification. This gives our engineers a keen understanding of Type-C implementations such as this USB subsytem, complemented by a solutions portfolio fully equipped to support every aspect of Type-C design.
Our subsystem level application diagram outlines the components that help create an efficient, robust and fully compliant USB Type-C design.
Used for signal protection, they automatically isolate the system from a faulty source of load. More protection is better, so look for features like under/over-voltage protection, reverse-current protection, over-temperature protection, and programmable current limits.
USB PD PHY
Our combination controller and protocol responder establishes Link operation and delivers power, in accordance with the new PD spec.
Type-C functionality requires a certain complexity in decision-making and the PD microcontroller, running embedded firmware, helps streamline operations. Implemented in a standard 32-bit Arm® MCU, it handles the back-channel communications.
High-performance signal switches
These provide a signal multiplex or de-multiplex function redirecting transmitted signals to the same (multiplex) or different (de-multiplex) connection ports. Sometimes these functions are combined to make a cross-point switch. These switches enable Type-C connectors to support Alternate Mode (flippable insertion) functions.
This also includes USB3 redrivers and HDMI level shifters/redrivers. They regenerate the USB signal, remove jitter, extend channel transmission and reduce the bit error rate. They improve the signal’s eye diagram, extend the link distance and help the system pass compliance testing.
NXP is the market leader in secure identification and authentication IC solutions. Solutions are available supporting a range of cryptographic protocols, interfaces and form factors. Secure hardware and software are complemented by certified secure development environments, production facilities and trust provisioning flows to ensure the highest levels of security and trust.
Our broad portfolio includes dedicated ESD protection devices, along with Common Mode filters that help eliminate interference with wireless technologies, including GSM, LTE and WiFi.
