The introduction of CAN flexible data rate (FD) enabled CAN networks to operate at higher data rates, supporting new and innovative features in automotive and industrial applications. However, as signal ringing becomes more apparent at higher speeds CAN FD struggles to keep the benefit of large and complex topologies as originally offered by CAN. In effect, CAN FD is limited in speed and constrained to simple, highly linear networks, reducing network flexibility and increases cabling cost and weight.
NXP untangles the trade-off between data rate and topology with the introduction of the CAN signal improvement capability (SIC) technology, NXP’s CAN SIC as implemented in the TJA146x actively improves the CAN signal and diminishes the effects of ringing, enabling higher data rates and greatly increasing freedom in network design.
