TSN guarantees latency and delivery times, unlike traditional Ethernet, which operates on a best-effort basis. This is essential for real-time industrial applications such as motion control and robotics. TSN achieves this through traffic prioritization and scheduling, ensuring real-time traffic is prioritized over best-effort traffic. Traditional Ethernet treats all traffic equally, which can cause delays or jitter when real-time and best-effort traffic share the same network. TSN is based on IEEE 802.1 standards, supporting vendor-neutral interoperability, while traditional Ethernet implementations may differ, especially in industrial settings.

SPE uses just one twisted pair of wires. Traditional Ethernet typically uses two or four pairs (i.e., 4 or 8 wires), or a fiber optic link. One SPE type enables a multi-drop, half-duplex architecture, whereas other types are full duplex, point-to-point - yes this is transmit and receive signals on the same wire pair !​ As a result, SPE cables are thinner and lighter than traditional ethernet cables, and coupled with SPE using miniaturized connectors, SPE is ideal for space- and/or power- constrained environments like automotive, industrial, and robotics.
