The M5234BCCKIT offers a complete low-cost method for evaluation of the NXP® MCF5234 ColdFire® microprocessor. It is similar to the M5235BCCKIT, but includes the new DP83640T PHYTER® High Precision - IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) Single Port Fast Ethernet Transceiver, supplied by National Semiconductor.
About IEEE 1588 PTP
IEEE1588 PTP allows clocks distributed across an Ethernet network to be accurately synchronised, using a process where the distributed nodes exchange timestamped messages.
The protocol can be implemented in software alone using a standard Ethernet module, however, as the timestamp information is applied at the application level, delay fluctuation introduced by the software stack means that only a limited precision can be achieved. Hardware timestamping of the IEEE1588 messages allows synchronisation with significantly improved precision to be achieved. The M5234BCC board will allow customers to use the National Semiconductor DP83640T PHYTER® with Our ColdFire family to develop precise IEEE1588 solutions.
