Fidelity Health Insurance Planning Tool

For those taking early retirement, the Health Insurance Before Medicare Planner tool can be helpful. The Health Insurance Before Medicare Planner   tool on NetBenefits helps members considering retirement before age 65 estimate costs for retirement health insurance before Medicare. This tool can be used for members between 45-64 years old and planning to retire before they turn 65.

FAQs

Delaying Medicare Parts A and B

If you turn 65 while still actively employed at NXP, you can delay Medicare Parts A and B without penalty if you enroll during a Special Enrollment Period and will need to also provide written proof of creditable drug coverage.

Is Medicare Primary?

No, if you are enrolled on the Active NXP medical plans, NXP plans are primary and Medicare is secondary.

Enrolling In Only Part A

Medicare Part A is usually premium-free for most people, so you could opt to enroll in only Part A while still working. However, if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), be aware that once you enroll in any part of Medicare, you cannot continue to make contributions to your HSA.

What Happens When My Spouse Turns 65?

If you have a spouse or domestic partner on your plan who is turning 65, their NXP coverage will remain active and NXP plan will be primary.

What Happens When I Leave NXP and My Spouse Is Under the Age of 65?

If you leave NXP, your active employee coverage will go through the end of the month during which you resign. Effective the 1st day of the following month, you will need to enroll in coverage through Medicare, COBRA or elsewhere. For example, if your last day at NXP is September 5th, your coverage will continue through September 30th. In this example, you and your enrolled dependents will be eligible to enroll in COBRA effective October 1st. If you are over the age of 65, you can choose to waive COBRA and enroll in Medicare. Your dependents (spouse or children) will still be eligible to enroll in COBRA. You can access your mynxpbenefits.com  within 5-10 business days after your last day at NXP. For assistance with your COBRA enrollment, please contact UnitedHealthcare at 888-532-3971.

What Happens If I Enroll in Both COBRA and Medicare?

If you are 65 or older when you leave NXP, you will need to enroll in Medicare because it will be your primary insurance. You can choose to waive COBRA for yourself and only enroll your dependents (spouse or children) in COBRA. You can access your mynxpbenefits.com  within 5-10 business days after your last day at NXP. For assistance with your COBRA enrollment, please contact UnitedHealthcare at 888-532-3971. For COBRA rate information, contact the US Benefits Team.

If you have COBRA when you become Medicare-eligible, your COBRA coverage usually ends on the date you become eligible for Medicare. You should enroll in Part B immediately because you are not entitled to a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) when COBRA ends. Your spouse and dependents may keep COBRA, regardless of whether you enroll in Medicare during that time.
