    1. Get Started

    The ADTJA1101-RMII product development board provides an easy-to-use platform for evaluating NXP's TJA1101 Ethernet PHY. Due to the standard onboard SABRE connector (Smart Application Blueprint for Rapid Engineering), it can be easily plugged onto suited NXP embedded processor development boards, to add Ethernet connectivity. The product offers longer battery life, a smaller form factor, reduced component counts, lower cost, and improved performance in powering state-of-the-art systems.

    This page will guide you through the process of setting up and using the ADTJA1101- RMII adapter board.

    1.1 Kit Contents/packing List

    The ADTJA1101-RMII contents include:

    • Assembled and tested ADTJA1101-RMII with SABRE connector for S32K148EVB
    • Cable: 0.5 m of jacketed Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), automotive grade
    • Screws x2

    1.2 Additional Hardware

    In addition to the kit contents, the following hardware is necessary or beneficial when working with this kit.

    • Host controller card (for example, S32K148EVB)
    • DC power supply: 5.0 V to 40 V with up to 20 A current handling capability, depending on the host controller card requirements
    • 3/16-inch blade screwdriver for connecting the cables
    • Optional hardware:

    1.3 Windows PC Workstation

    To set up the host controller and adapter card, a Windows PC workstation is required. Refer to the host controller card documentation for details.

    • USB-enabled computer with Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10

    2.1 Board Features

    The ADTJA1101-RMII adapter board evaluates the NXP part TJA1101, including all functions. The board features the following:

    • Adapter for example, S32K148 and i.MX8
    • Simple automotive Ethernet system setup for prototype applications
    • Quick functional evaluation of TJA1101
    • 100BASE-T1 connectivity at ECU prototyping stage
    • Simple chip configuration
    • Chip status report via onboard LEDs
    • Unshielded twisted-pair cable provided in the box
    • Screw connector for simple cable assembly
    • Config pin strapping by jumper settings
    • SABRE connector to host controller MII

    2.2 Board Description

    The ADTJA1101-RMII board is an easy-to-use adapter board, allowing the user to add 100BASE-T1 automotive Ethernet connectivity to host controllers on compatible controller cards. The TJA1101 PHY transceiver is mounted to the adapter card and connects to the RMII interface of the host controller via SABRE connector.

    Power supply and component configuration are provided and managed by the microcontroller (MCU) on the host evaluation board. The ADTJA1101-RMII connects to link partners via an automotive grade unshielded twisted-pair cable.

    2.3 Board Components

    The ADTJA1101-RMII adapter board features the TJA1101, an IEEE 100BASE-T1 compliant Ethernet PHY. This adapter board is used with a host controller board, like SK32148EVB, or other optional support boards.

    Configure the Hardware

    The ADTJA1101-RMII connects to the S32K148 evaluation board using the SABRE connector J1 on the bottom of the board.

    The S32K148 evaluation board was chosen specifically to work with the ADTJA1101- RMII kit because it is a low-cost evaluation platform and development system for quick application prototyping and demonstration of the S32K148 MCU belonging to the S32K series of ultra-reliable microcontrollers.

    Additional configurations for the ADTJA1101-RMII connected to the SJA1105Q-EVB and the SJA1105SMBEVM are illustrated in the ADTJA1101-RMII User Manual.


    To configure the ADTJA1101-RMII for use with the S32K148, complete the following procedure:

    1. Connect the ADTJA1101-RMII to the S32K148 using the SABRE connectors on each board.
    2. Connect the USB cable (not supplied with the kit) between the PC and the S32K USB port on the S32K148 board.
    3. The S32K148-EVB evaluation board powers from a USB or external 12 V power supply. By default USB power is enabled with J8.
    4. Connect the USB cable to a PC using supplied USB cable.
    5. Connect other end of USB cable (microUSB) to mini-B port on S32K148EVB at J24.
    6. Allow the PC to automatically configure the USB drivers if needed.
    7. Debug is done using OpenSDA through J2.

    3.2 TC10 Starter Kit Configuration

    To use the card in the context of TC10 starter kit configuration, the following components are required: up to four satellite nodes, consisting of S32K148EVB and ADTJA1101-RMII adapter card, can be connected to a central node: the SJA1105SMBEVM Gateway Prototyping Platform. These components, allow the user to quickly bring up system level sleep and wake-up forwarding scenarios, which are predefined and ready to load from the software development kit of S32K148EVB.

    The TC10 starter kit demonstrates the OPEN Alliance TC-10 compliant wake-up and sleep capabilities of the 100BASE-T1 PHY products TJA1101 and TJA1102. It also provides different ways to exploit these capabilities in own implementations and provides the hardware test bed for prototypical implementations.


    3.3 Additional TC10 Starter Kit Support

    When using the TC10 starter kit configuration, refer to the AH1805TC10 Starter Kit Application Hint. The application hint explains how to setup a system to evaluate the TJA1101 and TJA1102 product features in a system context.

    AH1805 also explains the usage for predefined software examples, which are available with the Software Development Kit (SDK) of the respective host controller.

    4.1 Preparing Graphical User Interface Operating Environment

    The configuration of ADTJA1101-RMII is handled by the host controller on the mated evaluation board.

    First, download and run the SDK for the selected host controller (for example, S32K148EVB SDK).

    The full TJA110x driver set is supported by the S32K148EVB Software Development Kit (SDK).
