NXP Semiconductors todayintroduced the HB2000 and HB2001 advanced brushed DC motor drivers. These motor drivers target automotive applicationsthat require functionally safe vehicle electrification like throttle control, cruise control, turbo flaps, and fuel flaps. The drivers feature SPI interfacefor control versatility, enhanced thermal features for reliable continuousoperation, and Processor Expert analog software driver enablement forstreamlined embedded system design. Additionally, the fully integrated drivers useNXP’s 45 V SmartMOS process. This process reduces board space bycombining digital control, precision analog circuitry and power MOSFETs in asmall, thermally efficient, 8 x 8mm PQFNpackage.
“Withgrowing demands for functional safety as the automotive industry moves toward self-drivingvehicles, NXP has been in the forefront in developing solutions that meetinternational standards such as ISO26262,” said Jens Hinrichsen, senior vicepresident and general manager of the advanced automotive analog business lineat NXP. “The HB2000 and HB2001 are the first motor drivers designed usingISO26262 processes in support of ASIL level C and D system qualification. NXPcontinues to assert itself as a leading expert in functional safety forenabling secure, connected, energy-efficient self-driving cars.”
Inaddition to functional safety, NXP’s analog software driver enablementtechnology leverages processor expert source code generation to revolutionizemixed signal embedded system design. With this enablement support, thenew motor drivers appear as any other integrated peripheral within the MCUsoftware development tools for MCU-savvy embedded system designers to quickly implementthem in their software projects. Analog software driver enablement forthe HB2000 and HB2001 will be compatible with legacy processor expert tools aswell as the new integrated development environments (IDE) for Kinetismicrocontrollers such as Kinetis Design Studio.
Smaller Package for Better VehicleElectrification Design
As part ofvehicle electrification, automotive makers are addressing emissions and ADASchallenges by replacing belt-driven loads and hydraulic controls with small, reliable electric motors. As the numberof motors and motor drivers in the car continues to grow, space considerationsbecome increasingly important. The HB2000 and HB2001 delivers 5A rms, >10 Apeak output current capability
Functional Safety
The automotive industry isactively cautious about functional safety. ISO26262 certification and ASILlevel C/D qualification are now frequently considered a standard necessity. They require complete safety manuals and supporting documentation that outlinesystem behavior for preventing malfunction. System safety integration is mademuch easier using solutions like the HB2000 and HB2001 that are designed usingISO26262 certified methodologies and include advanced diagnostic reporting andsafety features.
Accuracy, Flexibility and Configurability
The device senses load currentswithin ±5 percent tolerance across the entire operating range, without compromisingoutput performance. This allows advanced system-level diagnostics and closedloop motor control. Customers have design flexibility with a choice of PQFN orSOIC-EP package and two RDS(ON) options. Design configurability isavailable, through SPI control for different loads and EMI conditions, withfour current limit and eight slew rate settings. Several different applicationscan be addressed with a single software platform saving development time andinvestment.
Development Support
NXP offers a kit that includes theKinetis KL-25Z Freedom microprocessor evaluation board with a plug-in HB2000shield board and SPIGen user interface software for controlling a motor. Thecompanion software driver embedded component for the Processor Expert andKinetis Expert enablement tools will be available for download in late April.
Robust and Reliable Analog Performance
Many NXP analog products meetcritical industrial market requirements, including operation across extendedtemperature ranges. These products are designed and manufactured with rigorousprocess controls, and qualified using industry standard methodologies designedto yield defect rates in line with the stringent requirements of the automotiveand industrial markets. The HB2000 and HB2001 devices, as with most of NXP’sanalog products, are included in NXP’s product longevity program, whichprovides assurance of supply for a minimum of 10 or 15 years from the time oflaunch.
Availability and Pricing
The full family of products willbe available for purchase through direct sales and our distribution network inQ2, 2016. Samples in the 10 x 11 mm SOIC-EP package are available now, the 8 x8 mm PQFN option will be available in May.
