Since Swedish inventor Nils Bohlin invented the modern three point seat belt back in 1959 few inventions have had such a dramatic effect on driver safety. While airbags, ABS and electronic stability control have all helped to reduce fatalities on the road, the auto industry has yet to see another major step change in vehicle safety. Until now.
Car-to-X (C2X) communication (which includes Car-to-Car and
Car-to-Infrastructure communications) is set to be the next major technology
in car safety, with the potential to save thousands of lives each year. This
technology is sure to be a huge theme at this year’s
ITS World Congress, to be held September 7-11 in Detroit, Michigan.
Governments and authorities across the world are starting to recognize the benefits of C2X. Recently, two European committees for standardization, ETSI and CEN, announced a basic set of standards for connected cars. This ensures that vehicles made by different manufacturers can communicate with each other and with roadside infrastructure.
