Automatic DPC Calibration for PN7642/PN5190

The PN7642 and PN5190 are NXP's NFC Reader ICs with Dynamic Power Control (DPC) 2.0, which automatically regulates transmitter output to optimize RF field strength and ensure EMVCo/ISO/NFC compliance. Proper DPC calibration is essential, especially when using custom antennas, to prevent excessive RF output and ensure reliable operation.

For the PN7642 and PN5190, calibration is a guided process using NXP’s NFC Cockpit software, ci230 - NFC Development and Certification Tool , and executable provided by NXP. The process involves:

• Measuring and recording the current at each voltage step
• Measuring the power transfer at each step
• Generating a current reduction lookup table (LUT)
• Programming the LUT into the device’s EEPROM

This LUT allows the PN7642 and PN5190 to automatically adjust its output current for each voltage step, maintaining optimal RF performance and protecting the hardware. Calibration is performed once during antenna tuning.

Once calibrated, the PN7642/PN5190 automatically adapts to antenna changes and environmental conditions without host intervention, thanks to its advanced firmware and hardware integration.
