What do you get when five companies come together to address key challenges facing the development and production deployment of connected intelligent vehicles? You get The Fusion Project—a pre-integrated hardware, software and cloud solution combining their innovative technologies to efficiently collect, analyze and manage connected vehicle data with support for machine learning model training and deployment for continuous vehicle improvements. While providing an end-to-end solution supporting the data management lifecycle, the realization cost and model training time is dramatically reduced while maintaining high model accuracy with low latency.
The Vehicle Data Opportunity
As vehicles have advanced with new technologies and sensors, the amount of available data is exponentially increasing. This data can be used to power new data-centric features and continual vehicle improvements for consumers and revenue-generating opportunities for automakers. However, efficiently collecting, analyzing and managing vehicle data presents unique challenges to automakers.
The Challenges
Simply put, it’s because of fragmented data management across the machine learning lifecycle, static machine learning models, limited capabilities in intelligent edge computing and insufficient in-vehicle computing power. On top of this, other approaches are not optimized to extend to production vehicles which is key to realizing the promise of vehicles that improve over time.
An All-In-One Solution
So, in comes The Fusion Project, which pre-integrates technologies from five companies into a solution that automakers can easily evaluate and introduce into vehicle design and production cycles for next generation connected and autonomous vehicles. The five companies – Airbiquity®, Cloudera, NXP® Semiconductors, Teraki™ and Wind River® - combine the complex technologies and expertise required to provide an end-to-end solution that otherwise would require several man-years. It offers substantial new capabilities and efficiency improvements while reducing automotive OEM and Tier 1 development efforts.
First Use Case
The first application for The Fusion Project implements intelligent vehicle lane change detection using synergistic technologies from each company. This is a key use case required to support increased vehicle automation from lane keep to lane change maneuvers and on to fully autonomous driving applications. The company contributions include:
- Airbiquity – Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Management
- Cloudera – Data Lifecycle Solutions from Edge to AI
- NXP – Vehicle Processing Platforms
- Teraki – Edge Data Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Wind River – Intelligent Edge System Software
The complete data management lifecycle between the intelligent vehicle edge to the cloud highlighting each company’s contributions is shown in the figure below.

Airbiquity, Cloudera, NXP, Teraki and Wind River have opened the door for future intelligent connected vehicle use cases to cost-effectively access key vehicle data, train machine learning models in the cloud and deploy them to vehicles for continuous improvements.
The sky’s the limit for The Fusion Project, or in this case, the road is endless.
