Paweł Musiał, CTO of MpicoSys, created a base for an own energy oriented operating system – MpicOS that is used in MpicoSys projects and products.
The OS helps build advanced and low-power devices and allows MpicoSys to become and stay the leader in low-power embedded system developments.
NXP: When did you first consciously get in contact with NFC and how did you come up with your business idea?
Since the beginning of the company, we‘ve been innovating in the field of Smart Card devices with ePaper displays. NFC technology from its early days was a perfect fit for us due to its low-power and badge-format, used for products like our no-power PicoLabel. Combining technology with customer interests brought us to the idea of PicoLabel development. The important factor was the improvement of NFC technology, maturity and wide adoption of NFC by different vendors, for example, smartphone producers.
NXP: What does PicoLabel do to make a change in everyday life and how does it use NFC?
We love low-power challenges – NFC technology carries data and electrical energy and enables devices to not use batteries, with low maintenance and (very) long lifetimes. PicoLabel application used in logistics or visitor registrations, for example, allows logistics process improvement, reusability and easier combination of data access through NFC interface when compared to regular paper and barcode labels. Moreover, it contributes to saving the environment by reducing paper waste.
NXP: What about security?
Security of data has become a key in our electronics. With use of strong cryptography modules in PicoLabel (NXP A700x JCOP based) versions, we enable applications to provide highest possible protection.
NXP: How do you see the NFC technology evolving over the long term?
NFC is already widely accepted by people, moreover it’s became part of the IoT hype through which more and more users accept technologies that interact with each other. NFC provides an intuitive way of use through its proximity Technology, and that is well recognized and accepted by users.
NXP: From your personal point of view, which other NFC application should be a part of a smart home/living in future?
An intuitive way of passing data by getting objects in proximity makes an excellent fit in the smart home/living area. NFC could become useful specifically in battery-less applications (like PicoLabel) as well as universal means of inter-configuration handling.
NXP: What do you think has been the most important technological invention in human history?
In my view, there is no „most important“ invention, because each technological progress goes through evolution rather than revolution. Even small, tiny inventions and todays efforts contribute to the human history, that is the beauty of it.
NXP: Thanks for taking time to talk to us.
