StabiControl teamed-up with NXP Semiconductors and Embedded Office to create an ASIL D-compliant electronic control system powered by NXP’s S32K3 microcontrollers—combining functional safety, real-time performance and reliability for extreme off-road stability.
For heavy and off-road vehicles, safety and control are not optional–they are mission-critical. Operating in extreme conditions—such as steep inclines, shifting loads and unpredictable terrain—demands systems that deliver reliable stability under pressure.
StabiControl—a German start-up specializing in advanced stabilization systems for niche off-road and heavy vehicles—met the challenge of engineering a control system that performs flawlessly under extreme conditions. To meet this demand, the company collaborated with NXP Semiconductors and Embedded Office to deliver a single, scalable platform that combines functional safety, real-time performance and long-term reliability.
Tackling the Demands of Heavy Off-Road Performance
StabiControl faced a challenge familiar to many in the off-road sector—demanding real-time control requirements, high cycle rates and real-time responsiveness—all while meeting stringent ASIL D safety standards while providing a future-proof foundation and scalable capabilities for future growth.
Because heavy vehicles operate under unique dynamics where milliseconds matter, StabiControl's engineers required a robust Electronic Control System (ECS) capable of ensuring precise vehicle stabilization and consistent performance across unpredictable terrain.
NXP's S32K3 were StabiControl's choice for a microcontroller (MCU) as they required a robust, automotive-qualified platform for serial production. The S32K3 MCUs delivered exactly what their engineers required—automotive-grade performance designed for harsh, mission-critical environments; a comprehensive functional safety architecture (ISO 26262 up to ASIL D compliant) supported by Real-Time Drivers (RTD) and the Flexible Safety real-time operating system (RTOS) from Embedded Office; and long-term product longevity to ensure reliability and scalability for next-generation stabilization systems.
A Technical Collaboration Built on Safety and Expertise
Embedded Office—an established expert in certified embedded software and RTOSes—played a crucial role in integrating the RTD software framework to achieve deterministic real-time behavior while maintaining customization flexibility for StabiControl's ECS solution.
Working closely with NXP engineers, StabiControl built a system capable of handling the real-time demands of stabilization algorithms while maintaining compliance with stringent safety and quality standards.
NXP's RTDs played a pivotal role in this implementation, delivering standardized, automotive-grade interfaces that streamlined configuration, enhanced determinism and accelerated development cycles. Although the RTD configuration proved to be more complex than anticipated, NXP's cooperative support and deep product expertise enabled StabiControl engineers to overcome integration challenges efficiently—highlighting the value of co-creation and technical transparency.
