The BMA8420 is a battery junction box controller integrated circuit (IC) with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) capability designed for automotive applications such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), electric vehicles (EV) and industrial applications (ESS).

The device measures redundant currents, voltages and temperatures. It processes the results and detects fault events such as short circuit, system overload, crash signals, etc. These events can be combined and used to trigger reactions without a microcontroller (MCU) including general-purpose inputs/outputs (GPIOs) or a pyrotechnic switch.

The device offers an isolated daisy chain (TPL3) or a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for communication with the MCU. The BMA8420 delivers the features needed for applications to achieve the maximum ASIL D standards.

Features

Current Measurement

  • Four current measurement channels (supporting two ASIL D current measurements)
  • One precise measurement branch and one fast measurement branch per channel
  • Shunt temperature drift compensation based on an external temperature sensor
  • Overcurrent detection (OD) (threshold, di/dt calculation, melting fuse emulation)

Precise Voltage Measurement

  • Two independent precision voltage measurement channels
  • Clock cycle accurate synchronization with current measurements

General-Purpose Measurement

  • Two independent sets of 8 measurement inputs
  • Multiplexed with 2 x 8 GPIOs

Event Manager

  • Configurable decision engine to assess measurement inputs and trigger reactions
  • Set of event signals (e.g., high di/dt, overcurrent, overvoltage and overtemperature)
  • Triggering reactions (e.g., Pyrotechnic Switch Controller, MCU wake-up and GPIOs)

Pyrotechnic Switch Controller (PSC)

  • Two independent controllers including driver stage
  • AK-LV 16 (2012-07) compliant
  • Rapid triggering by the event manager without MCU processing
  • Extensive set of diagnostics (diagnostic current, capacitor measurement, equivalent series resistance [ESR] measurement...)

Communication

  • SPI controller host interface and I²C host interface
  • MCU host controller supporting SPI or transformer physical layer, second generation (TPL2)

EIS

  • Integrated single frequency discrete Fourier transform (DFT) calculation
  • Synchronization between host clock and cell measurement
  • Synchronized 50% duty cycle GPIO output for EIS excitation
