Serial peripheral interface (SPI) is the full duplex synchronous serial interface consisting of four signals: SCLK (serial clock), COTI (controller out, target in), CITO (controller in, target out) and TS (target select) used for short-distance, high-speed communications. The SPI bus operates with a single controller device and one or more target devices with data rate ranges from 5 to 20 Mbit/s.

Bridge ICs allow designers to connect devices that use different serial buses, such as I2C or SPI to UART, I2C to SPI or SPI to I2C.
Drives LED and monitor switches without using any microprocessor pins.
For blinking, dimming and color mixing LEDs; frees the microprocessor for other purposes.
Targets applications needing accurate timekeeping: ultra-low power, high-temperature tolerant, temperature compensated and high accuracy.
Allows easy connection between a wide range of supply voltage domains.
