Across the mobility and transportation industries, one theme is undeniable: the pace of change has never been this rapid. Vehicles, robotics, mobility platforms and intelligent edge systems are all becoming software defined. As functionality shifts into software, the real challenge is no longer just about performance anymore, it’s also about seamless integration.
The shift unlocks new possibilities, but it also adds complexity for developers who are under constant pressure to deliver rapidly. At NXP, we believe complexity shouldn't slow innovation and FRDM Automotive enables developers to manage that complexity more effectively.
Whether you’re designing a smart edge node controller for a next-generation vehicle, building an autonomous robot or prototyping a distributed control system, the challenges are surprisingly similar. For each, you need hardware that scales, software that just works, and the ability to move fast without sacrificing safety or reliability.
FRDM Automotive platform is purpose-built to remove friction from early development and turn complex system design into a smooth, intuitive experience. Instead of spending weeks setting up tools and debugging infrastructure, developers can power on, load their environment and begin running applications almost immediately. The focus shifts from “getting things working” to “building what matters.”
Development complexity for next‑gen mobility solutions is on the rise. Discover the FRDM Automotive platform and speed up innovation with easy, cost‑effective tools.
FRDM has already proven its value. The FRDM development platform launched in 2024 for the MCX MCU line and expanded to i.MX microprocessing units (MPUs) in early 2025, gaining rapid adoption across industrial and IoT applications. The concept needed to evolve for automotive and transportation industries that are defined by tight development cycles and increasing design complexity.
The FRDM Automotive hardware platform launched with eight boards, and more to follow: FRDM-A-S32K118, FRDM-A-S32K118V, FRDM-A-S32K144, FRDM-A-S32K144N, FRDM-A-S32K312, FRDM-A-S32K344, FRDM-A-S32K358 *, FRDM-A-S32M276.
* Coming Soon
The boards are built on the scalable S32 automotive processing platform’s MCUs (S32K1, S32K3, S32M2), covering a wide performance range from low‑end to high‑end applications. They include integrated, motor‑control‑ready boards based on the S32M2 series and are compatible with existing NXP analog boards, enabling easy reuse of current designs. In addition, a readily available, downloadable software package is provided to support and accelerate your development process.
The FRDM Automotive platform is built around a flexible, modular approach to system design. Think of it as a set of Lego‑like building blocks: easy to combine, simple to reconfigure and designed to morph as your ideas grow with the expansion boards.
This modularity allows teams to explore new architectures early, validate ideas quickly and scale confidently as designs mature. Moreover, with entry-level pricing starting at just $29, the platform is purposefully accessible, making development and innovation easy from day one.
Innovate with FRDM Automotive powered by the S32 automotive processing platform’s microcontrollers. Order a FRDM-A-S32K development board for your next project.
Software setup is often the foremost bottleneck in development and FRDM Automotive reduces this complexity. With single-click installation, developers get a complete software package: integrated development environment (IDE), real-time operating systems and communication stacks. Engineers can load, run and begin prototyping in less than 30 minutes building full proof-of-concept systems in under an hour. After installation, the Application Code Hub (ACH) can be used to start building applications with ready-to-use examples, which can then be evolved into a production-ready solution.
FRDM Automotive goes beyond rapid prototyping—it’s designed to support production-ready, real-world products. A ready-to-use software package includes core drivers (Real-Time Drivers), middleware and tools, while additional stacks such as safety software, Math and Motor Libraries and the Model-Based Design Toolbox can be layered in as needed. This modular approach reduces development risk, accelerates certification timelines and lowers overall system cost.
What makes FRDM Automotive truly powerful is how it brings everything in the development experience together:
Whether you’re advancing software-defined vehicles (SDVs), autonomous robotics, or intelligent distributed systems, FRDM Automotive gives you the speed and confidence to move from ideas to reality faster. Start your development today.
