In 1929, Philips Semiconductor chose Leuven, Belgium for its first site outside of The Netherlands. The company spun off from Philips to become NXP Semiconductors in 2006. Today, NXP activities in Belgium include world-class R&D teams in the areas of audio, sound and acoustics, connectivity systems, security and privacy, communication software and ultra-low power solutions for medical devices.
The NXP Personal Health product line is headquartered in Leuven. The team here is responsible for developing the NTAG® SmartSensor, a single-chip solution that combines NFC connectivity and autonomous sensing, data processing and logging.
NXP Belgium is a very innovative site. Within the company, we have the highest average number of patents per person resulting in an impressive patent wall.

NXP Belgium collaborates with universities in Belgium to give students real-world experience through internships and provide masters students with thesis assistance. We participate in annual job fairs and hire from universities like Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. We also support education at primary and secondary levels through laptop donation and STEM programs.
R&D Community
In 2020, the European Commission declared Leuven to be the European Capital of Innovation and NXP is proud to be a part of this environment of invention. We are a member of Leuven MindGate , a cooperation between the government, local companies and knowledge institutions focused on elevating Leuven as a top destination in health, high-tech and creativity.
